I'm sure Julia's advice is good with respect to the coop. As far as the birds, I've had lice in the past. Lice are not the same as mites, but maybe this is useful anyway.   Bathing the birds helps. In general, it is easier than bathing a cat but dep…

Thanks so much! I can't find any info on the hours for that Cambie Market. Does anyone know what their hours are?   I will check out NOWBC again too. Maybe if I volunteer a shift or two I could get more familiar. (It would have to be evening or week…

You absolutely do not need an electric appliance to make kim chee! All you need is veggies, salt, spices, and a jar! Room temp and fridge or cooler/root cellar temp, and patience. :-) I don't know why you'd bury it, but maybe it has something to do…

Hi Alyssa,   You go girl!  There is definitely still BC organic produce to be had and will be all winter, and its TOTALLY worth finding because its yummy and nutritious.  Greens are the only thing on your list that I do have trouble finding locally…

The Colorado girls started laying on Saturday, December 11. (Well, I found 3 eggs in there that day, so they probably started Friday). They arrived here on October 30, and Rosie was molting then. So this is no comment on when young girls start layin…

Do you want to trade some eggs? (Technically not allowed to sell in Vancouver). My girls aren't laying yet, and I was a bit horrified to have to buy eggs at the store last week. I only need 1 dozen.

Great idea!

Did that University lady ever send you a link? She said her article would be up Sunday (I think) and I asked her to send me the link but she didn't yet.

I think the red bulbs are best. Less light and more heat. Plus they make them shatter-resistant (if they got wet or someone pecked at them). You need a special ballast, but they are not hard to find.

OK, I like these ideas. I'm thinking a reptile heater would work too, and be much safer (than a light bulb - my coop is only 16" high, so I can't get anything out of reach of the girls). I'm going to insulate (with cardboard) where I can, and see wh…

How about keeping the water from freezing? Anyone know if Marks or the other pet store on Commercial sells heated waterers? Mine was frozen by the time I got home from work today (after dark). Darn its cold out there. Most standard breeds are good…

Julia, Thank you - by their name and what you said (expensive) I understand them to be somewhat (or entirely) an 'emergency' vet. (For the record I have two day vets and one emergency, just for the birds, in Denver). So nothing lost there - just not…

Hi Alyssa,

I've been having problems with my email for the past week (mostly better now) -- have about 50 people to get back to...but I will as soon as possible.

Thanks for your patience,
Ross
