Mystery illness?

Hi,I recently had a hen die of a mysterious illness. At least I assume that's what she died of. She had reddish brown flat, irregular shaped scabs that spread over her comb and wattles and she seemed tired and didn't stay with the other girls, spent lots of time laying down. Then her tail went down instead of the normal cocked up tail attitude, and her "friends' shunned and bullied her. Final evening she was breathing heavily and refused food and in the morning she was dead. All this went down…See More

Their back yard, your hens?

Anyone renting and can't have a coop? You might consider contacting the garden sharing groups for people who own a back yard and can't/don't want to maintain it and offer to share it with gardeners. You could try the community gardens, but they can be a bit isolated at night and your hens would be more vulnerable to animal and human predation. The big sell would be free chicken manure and a compost shredding service. My hens are big help with shredding weeds for the compost-used to be such a…See More

Permaculture Village

Transition is based on, and inspired by,  Permaculture principles. Permaculture is permanent agriculture and permanent culture. We will be approaching 'creating sustainable habitat' in many different ways: regular design & demonstration projects; Social permaculture; workshops. Permablitzes, Blitzes or Permaculture Energy Transfer or Pet Day are days that we go on site collectively create systems which cycle energy toward win win win economy. Food forests provide abundant gardens and parks…See More

I hope your research is going well. I just put 8 solar panels on my 92-year-old house...a great fit, the new and the old. Total cost, just under $4,500, and largely because the older construction made it so easy. My energy bills have been cut by more than half, not a huge savings and financial payback will still take more than a decade, but it's a start.
