Return to Earth?

My honeysuckle and berries have survived. I guess this is good news of sorts.I've been all over the place this past year, but not so much in the garden. As a matter of fact, the (un)garden has been converted to a gravel patch by my building manager...what was wrong with grass? It was messy.I've taken it as a message from the universe: it's time to get wise. ;)There is another patch of land I have set my sights on. Enclosed in concrete and metal fence it waits for the right person. Maybe me. See More

In which Vancouver neighbourhood or other community do you live?
West End

Just a bit of background

My living room window looks out on a patch of grass and a generator in a cage of sorts. I would like to see something else, but I won't be moving any time soon.
I read and saved an article by Carolyn Herriot on edible gardens in Common Ground last spring, got inspired, and finally, this year I'm ready to do something.
That is how I found this community- just poking around for some info on how to start a garden.
I've grown up in Serbia and Croatia where I've always had access to a garden. I come from a family of florists from Vojvodina, a Northern area of Serbia. Since moving to Vancouver 16 years ago I haven't had a garden, and I miss it.
I'm a fine arts student in 4th year at Emily Carr, with a background in textiles. Emily Carr has been a challenging fit, but, I am thankful for their emphasis on philosophy, specifically ethics and environmental issues.
Here I'm hoping to find and be inspired by people with similar interests, and also participate more actively by sharing my knowledge with those communities.

garden update

Since signing up here, I've attended one of the gardening workshops hosted by V.V. It was most helpful in getting me to get that rake and shovel out, and dig in. I've since dug up a small part of the grass for an experimental area.I want to plant some herbs and shade plants there, and possibly a few things that bloom. It is in the shade, and so far I haven't had a lot of growth. I planted a honeysuckle vine next to the cage, in hope it grows over it. I've also planted a black currant and a… Continue

Welcome, Sibila!

As you can see, we are just beginning to build an on-line community for Village Vancouver, and organize our extensive activities more openly and collaboratively through this site. Please feel free to contribute to a discussion, attend or even enter a new event, join a working group, or even form a Village.

With the West End Residents Association (WERA), you are already in a great neighbourhood and fellow West-ender Ivan is an inspiring environmentalist.

I hope you can join in our activities.
