Profile Information

In which Vancouver neighbourhood or other community do you live?
Grandview-Woodland
Please tell us which areas of Transition interest you. For example: growing more food/urban agriculture, relocalizing our economy/local currency, Permaculture, transit, energy efficient buildings, the arts, urban homesteading, preserving seed diversity, placemaking, potlucks, outreach, organizing events, community-building, having fun while saving the world, or...
I'm new to the idea of areas of transition so I'm interested in a general introduction, but areas that interest me most are in food production, particularly bee-keeping and veggies/fruit (and perhaps mushroom!) growing. I'm also interested in the arts and finding ways to interact with other neighbourhood members; to mediate between the privacy city-folk are used to with the connectedness of actively seeking out interactions with one another.
There's a saying that "Transition is not a spectator sport". It's true! Village Vancouver runs on people power, and engaging in activities and projects together helps us accomplish more. Which groups, networks, neighbourhood villages, or projects do you think you might be interested in getting involved with? And what knowledge, skills, resources or other assets can you bring to the mix? (Don't be bashful!)
I'm very interested in the Guerrilla Gardneners and the Commercial Area Beekeepers group! I love the idea of Little Free Library Boxes as on 10th ave between Kingsway and Fraser. Housing co-ops are another area that I'm looking in to but am still new to.

I have an active interest in running things with an eye towards fairness and equality. The co-op model is something I'm very excited about learning more of. I have a bachelors of design and can bring illustration and design-work to the mix, and my background in services gives me grounding in front-facing interactions with the community. I am discovering a passion for learning and asking questions, which I think will lend well to the same goal of getting involved and spreading the word!
What would you like to see improved in Vancouver or in your community regarding sustainability or resiliency? Do you have an idea for a new Transition project or activity?
I think that my side of the neighborhood may not be as passionate about sustainability or community resiliency because the area is dedicated to lower-income families who are renting, who come and go and don't necessarily have the time or resources to sink into a long-term project. I think that if there are projects that cater to people who have less to begin with to get them stoked about the here and now, that they can take with them if they need to move, that they can feel proud about because the project is not about the middle-class curb-side-appeal aesthetic... finding ways to bring a positive attitude to my neighbourhood would be lovely. I live on the side of the Drive that's close to Clark and Broadway, and it would be great to see it flourish in the same way that the neighbourhoods further north up the Drive are doing!
I agree to read and abide by the Site Guidelines under the About tab on the navigation bar, remaining respectful in all communications on this web site.

I've signed up because I am on a bee hunt! I found out about this group through the 2013 Car Free Day on the Drive, and now I want to know more!
