Carrots in the Car Park, a tale of today's Victory Gardens in England - Daily Mail, 10 Dec 2011

Carrots in the car park. Radishes on the roundabout. The deliciously eccentric story of the town growing ALL its own veg

Admittedly, it sounds like the most foolhardy of criminal capers, and one of the cheekiest, too.

Free wood stakes

Vision Vancouver has a bunch of wood stakes (from their campaign signs) at lengths ranging from 12" to 8' that "would be excellent for use in garden projects". The wood is free and on a first come basis.  The wood  can be collected from the parking space in the back of their office at 2512 Yukon Street.
They ask that, when picking up, the two parking spaces to the west of the parking area NOT BE BLOCKED as they belong to the Dollar Store business below their office.

Michael Moore on The Future of the Occupy movement

Where Does Occupy Wall Street Go From Here? ...a proposal from Michael Moore

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

Friends,

This past weekend I participated in a four-hour meeting of Occupy Wall Street activists whose job it is to come up with the vision and goals of the movement. It was attended by 40+ people and the discussion was both inspiring and invigorating. Here is what we ended up proposing as the movement's "vision statement" to the General Assembly of Occupy Wall Street:

We…

Dirk Becker's Comments on the Occupy Movement - November 2

by Dirk Becker

It all started with an email.

On July 13, 2011 Adbusters magazine sent out a call to its 90,000-strong list proclaiming a Twitter hashtag, #OccupyWallStreet, and a date, September 17. It quickly spread among the mostly young, tech-savvy radical set, along…

OSRL is going to have a CEB press soon

Hello all.

I thought I would put it out there that OSRL (Open source Resilient Living), based in Burnaby, with any luck will have a CEB (compessed earth brick) press soon.  I have the design just about done and soon will have drawings to share with everyone.  In the interest of raising some funds for more projects, I would be willing to rent the machine out to group members for a good rate.

This is a great…

ForestEthics - Because protecting forests is everyone's business

Hey there,

We have a chance to save a forested area the size of Maine from destruction by Canada's Tar Sands, but we need a lot of people to chime in to do it.

Dole and Chiquita produce half of the world's bananas, and because bananas require so much fuel to reach our fruit bowls, we need banana producers to use the cleanest fuels available to protect our health and our planet. Can you ask Dole and Chiquita to reject the Tar Sands in favor of cleaner…

Our Most Basic Right -- To Choose What we Eat -- Denied in Canada

Some of you may have been following the case of Michael Schmidt, biodynamic farmer in Ontario who is currently on a hunger strike. I think it is day 19 now....

What is he protesting? Our very basic right to decide for ourselves what we put into our own bodies.

In both the US and Canada, judges have ruled that we can't drink milk right from our own cows. Canada and the US are marching in-step towards a future where our food is completely controlled by…

Occupy Vancouver

We, the Ninety-Nine Percent, come together with our diverse experiences to transform the unequal, unfair, and growing disparity in the distribution of power and wealth in our city and around the globe. We challenge corporate greed, corruption, and the collusion between corporate power and government. We oppose systemic inequality, militarization, environmental destruction, and the erosion of civil liberties and human rights. We seek economic security, genuine equality, and the protection of…

System change not climate change: What does it mean where the rubber hits the road?

By Eric Doherty, October 11, 2011

The slogan “System change not climate change” is well known in Europe, and is becoming a central rallying cry in the growing global movement for climate justice. But to many people in North America, it is still an unfamiliar and even threatening slogan. So what does “system change” mean where the rubber hits the…

PARK(ing) Day: Reclaiming Our Streets from Our Cars

by Yves Engler and Bianca Mugyenyi

On Friday activists and artists will be celebrating PARK(ing) Day in hundreds of cities around the world.

Begun in San Francisco six years ago the aim of the annual event is “to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “‘PARK(ing)’ spaces: temporary public places.” Organizers generally add benches or fake grass to pieces of public property usually taken up by a private car.… Continue

What we've been up to this summer...

Summer is coming to an end (even though it doesn't feel like it) and we're taking a look back at what we've been up to the past few months at The World In A Garden. We've kept ourselves busy (and we still are) with farmers markets, workshops, volunteer events and of course, lots of weeding! Here are some highlights from the summer:…

August 29 Tomato Harvest and Taste Test September 4

This picture shows all the varieties and quantities I harvested August 29 (and there's still more). If you're wondering about the brown tip tomatoes, those are Ardwynna Paste tomatoes with blossom end rot. It is a deficiency in the soil and the cure is to dissolve epsom salts and water, and give the afflicted plant a dose.

I appear to have a lot of…
