Just a few things... I am curious why this group is being kept private? Wouldn't we get more members if people could read about us?
Also, did you know there is a Neighbourhood Small Grant available for our area $50-500. The app is due March 31! A bit tight. But maybe a great way to get some funds for a neighbourhood event? One idea would be a seed/ plant swap event? Thoughts?
I don't think anyone is intentionally keeping this group private -- we just don't yet know how to use the web site! ;)
There was a small gathering of interested families at my house on Sat Mar 27, over Earth Hour. All families came from within 2-3 blocks of my house, (nr Fleming & 21st). I would like to start a climate circle, following Guy Dauncey's suggested plan. Are you interested?
I plan to post more to this site over the couple of weeks. I hope we can get some activity going!
As for the Small Grant application, I was going to write one up for the climate circle group; but if you have an idea for a plant event, go for it!
Robin, sorry for the delay. I missed the deadline for the grant (on purpose this year because of commitments with the business I run). Did you apply? I am curious to hear more about the climate circle.
I just posted info on a seed saving collective meeting/potluck Saturday, Jan.8 (10-12). Email me by Jan.7 if you're interested in attending this. Thanks. cylia
Hi everyone! I hope the following isn't regarded as spam of any sort. Looking for a dry and secure space to store a canopy and large folding table (6' x 2'6" with legs that fold under). These items are being held for event use -- our May 1 spring fling and could be used for Village Vancouver or other local community events. Does anyone have space in their garage or basement? We live in a townhouse. Thanks. Cylia
Cool...if you don't find storage in the village, we can find storage elsewhere. Do you need anything else for May 1st? (For instance, other tables, use of cargo bike to deliver stuff to site?)
We'd likely want to use canopy, maybe table for Car Free Day neighbourhood demo village at Main Street Festival, and possibly for folk fest in July.
Yes, we are open to it. This blurb is what I've been sending to enquiring vendors.
"The spring fling is our garden celebration in which we invite and support local business, artisans, crafters, etc. to showcase their wares, etc., basically for free. Should the vendor feel that s/he has made enough profit, a donation to the garden is appreciated. That said, s/he would need to bring all of her/his own stuff (since we have few canopies and tables to share) and will need to confirm by April 15 so we can ensure there is a space available for her/himon the site plan. The event is from 12-3 pm and the vendor is expected to show up at 1130 am to setup and ask for Cylia, the site coordinator. There are no bathrooms on site, however, we have contacts with our neighbors. For further info, contact cylia@telus.net Thank you for being part of our celebration!!
It looks like we won't be able to pickup the folding table after all, so we just have the canopy to store for now. If anyone wants to do this, check freecycle and contact them from there. Thanks. cylia
I don't know how to respond to messages sent to the whole group, but we do have a color ink jet printer if you need to borrow it. We can do it this weekend if you have the transfer paper.
The Environmental Youth Alliance has partnered with the City of Vancouver to work with community members in creating a new urban agriculture site on the former grounds of Richard Copley's historical orchard. In keeping with the site's history, the focus of the project will be perennial fruit culture and celebration.
The site has been vacant for over 30 years, and is the grassy field that lies between Walker St. and Copley St, just north of Vaness Avenue and the Skytrain.
The development of this site will be a blend of community tended plots, social gathering space, a productive berry patch and orchard, and many other possibilities that have not yet been detailed.
OPEN HOUSE: We are holding an open house to gather input and ideas from community members and begin planning for fall planting activities. Whether you want to be involved in further planning and activities, or are simply curious about the site, please join us. Refreshments will be provided.
Please contact me if you have any questions, concerns or comments.
Also - check out our webpage for more information and a map of the site:
We are really hoping for strong community engagement with this project and our Open House is the first of many steps towards creating a beautiful, productive, perennial urban agriculture site that will be a precious resource to the community around it and the city as a whole!
The blueberries are ready and wondering if anyone in my village is interested in going out for a couple of hours (preferably arriving at 10 am at the farm) for an old-fashioned blueberry u-pick. DFG Blueberries has been a blueberry farm bearing the title organic, since 1993! I can offer a carpool ride (max. 3 seats available). We could also do veg.lunch if interested. Email me before the weekend. Thanks.
I hope you are enjoying this lovely "end of summer" sunshine. The KCC Neighbour Newspaper Committee is now working on the October edition of the paper.

Please submit articles of approximately 300 words along with photos if possible by September 23rd to ccnh@cedarcottage.org or drop off at the Cedar Cottage Neighbourhood House, 4065 Victoria Drive.

Hoping that a few people living in the Cedar Cottage area join our seed saving collective for 2012. We are down to 2 members in our core group and this will severely limit our ability to hold workshops (for the benefit of the public) and to continue growing out our available seed stock. Please email me if you are interested in helping out. Thanks.
Sending love, hugs and hellos to my fellow villagers. I wanted to share that tonight a dozen of us met at Kensington Library to discuss Food Security in the Cedar Cottage Trout Lake 'hood and it was a very fun wonderful night! There will be more activity coming from this group this year and I am excited - hope to cross paths soon :) http://tlccfoodsecurity.blogspot.com/
The Neighbourhood Small Grants are back again, and the deadline for applications (a very simple 2 pager) for the Cedar Cottage neighbourhood is April 30th. Check it out at http://cedarcottage.org/nsg.html
