Vancouver's Leader in Transition toward Strong, Resilient, Complete Communities
Sad news. Our great friend and ally, Robin Wheeler, passed away Monday afternoon, after battling pancreatic cancer for the past year. A kind, wise, patient and loving soul, Robin was the author of Gardening for the Faint of Heart and Food Security for the Faint of Heart, founder of the Sustainable Living Arts School and One Straw Society, and taught several dozen workshops for Village over the past 3 years.
She touched hundreds (and likely thousands) of us in gentle and nurturing ways and will be sorely missed.
Please feel free to share your thoughts here, and we'll pass them along to her friends and family.

Robin was patient, humble, generous, and kind. She gave several workshops in the West End in the past few years. We'll miss her, but her gentle caring will live on in the work and activities we do. Robin has planted many seeds. Many will sprout and grow. Thank you, Robin!
Hi Cabot,
Your friends info is correct. Here are a few more details:
Times and dates for the memorial in North Vancouver and Celebration of Robin's Life in Roberts Creek have been announced:
1) The memorial in North Vancouver will take place on Monday, February 27th at 2 pm at the Boal Memorial Chapel. Everyone is welcome.
2) Please join us for a local Celebration of Robin's Life on Sunday, March 4th from 3 - 6 pm at the Roberts Creek Hall. We'll be potlucking together at 5 pm, so please bring some food to share. We are putting together some lovely activities to honour Robin and create space for us to share ... please stay tuned for more details. We'll also need volunteers to help at the event and beforehand.
A friend of mine in Roberts Creek tells me that she read in the paper that there will be a memorial service for Robin at Boal Memorial Chapel in North Van on Monday Feb 27th at 2pm and a celebration of life at Roberts Creek Hall Sunday, Mar 4th from 3-6pm
Robin's legacy: an inspiring teacher, a wonderful sense of humour, two great books, and a community of dedicated friends and aspiring gardeners. She will be missed but for those of us whose lives she touched, her contributions live on.
Gardening for the Faint of Heart is a bible for foodies seeking to improve their hearts, and every other part of their anatomy, by growing more of their food at home. Thank you, Robin.
Thanks for the comments so far. This post is getting a lot of views (80 in 2 days); we hope more of you will post your thoughts, as we'd like to pass them along to Robin's friends and family soon.

P.S. Angela, I did show Robin the garden when she was last here in October, and she liked it.
Very sad news. I took two workshops with Robin and purchased her books. Robin's delightful and gentle humour brightened winter days and inspired plans for the growing season. Robin's ideas about edible landscaping took root and inspired the Kits Point Community Garden at the Billy Bishop Legion in Vancouver. Now entering its second year food crops are infiltrating the landscape design but sadly Robin did not get to see the 'Billy' transformation. We will greatly miss her.
Very sorry to hear of Robyn's passing. I'm grateful to have hosted one of her workshops in our home on container gardening two summers ago. Thinking of all the people over the years who took the skills that they learned in her workshops to start growing food in backyards and on windowsills and balconies across the city.
This is sad indeed.
I got to know Robin during the late 90's before she moved to her little homestead and benefitted from her hospitality several summers in a row while she was establishing her gardens and nursery at the new place. We lost touch over the years as my family and I no longer traveled to the SS Coast, although I always enjoyed her posts on the vanpermaculture listserve. I didn't realize she had cancer.
I'm sure I am not the only one who enjoyed her generous spirit and incisive humour and realism. She had the wonderful gift of connecting people and she will be missed.
If there is to be a memorial, I hope the event will be posted on VV.
