On June 26th please join thousands across the world to draw a line in the sand against offshore oil drilling. The image is powerful, the message is
simple. NO to Offshore Oil Drilling, YES to Clean Energy.
Hands Across the Sand is a movement made of people of all walks of life and crosses political affiliations. This movement is not about politics; it is
about protection of our coastal economies, oceans, marine wildlife, and fishing
industry. Let us share our knowledge, energies and passion for protecting all
of the above from the devastating effects of oil drilling.
A Message To The World
Hands Across the Sand is now international. Any person in any country may plan events. This is a peaceful gathering of the people of the world. Planning an
event is as simple as this:
* Go to your beach on June 26 at 11 AM in your time zone.
* Form lines in the sand and at 12:00, join hands.
In the United States, Salem is one of 17 locations around the state and 500 around the country where residents will
gather and hold hands noon today for 15 minutes to protest a proposed federal
increase in off-shore drilling.
It's part of a national event called "Hands Across the Sand," which started in February when thousands of people joined hands from Jacksonville to Miami Beach
against proposed expanded oil drilling in Florida. Energy bill proposals in congress
call for lifting the ban on oil drilling in the near and off shores around the country,
including Florida.
The ongoing spill in the Gulf of Mexico
sparked a nationwide movement.
All events are set for noon today. Organizers hope to draw hundreds to the Oregon state Capitol for Salem's event. For more information go to http://handsacrossthesand.com.
