We got our rain barrels set up yesterday. Had to clean out the gutters which was one of my least favorite jobs on my little farm so far but I find myself looking forward to the rain for the first time ever so that's cool. We were going to make them ourselves but the ones the city is selling were only $75 each and come with everything you need so we decided to go with those ones. They're made out of recycled plastic and look less ghetto than whatever we would have come up with on our own which I'm sure my neighbours will be grateful for.
We also want to set up a pump system to tap into the tremendous amount of ground water we have running through our property. We just had a new drainage system put in so it should be fairly straightforward. Just don't want to fork out $300 for a pump right now and I haven't been able to sell my boyfriend on the virtues of a full upper body workout by hand pump.
Our seeds started peeking through this weekend and are growing like crazy now. Very exciting to see green for a change! Should be able to get the bean teepee started next weekend.
The chicks got punted out of the dining room this morning because they're just making too much mess so they're bunking with the seedlings in the kitchen now. I think they'll be warm enough in there but they still have the heater in case it gets chilly. They're growing like CRAZY! I'll have to post some new pictures soon.
We set up an outdoor run area for the outdoor chickens this weekend because we're tired of having to negotiate yard access with chickens and dogs. They aren't very happy about it but they seemed less happy about being chased by the dogs. The Hamburgs can still escape so last night, after a fun evening of stray chicken hunting by flashlight, we decided to go ahead and clip their wings.
Still only getting one egg a day. The Marans' seem to take turns and the other three are just freeloaders and are starting to look tasty. We'll see how they're producing when its time to move the chicks out.
Well the 60km/hr winds just got here so I better go out and close up the coop before one of the doors slams shut and cuts us down to one egg a week!
