Where can I find some chicken saddles?

Hi all,      I have an enthusiastic rooster who is torturing his favourite few girls and tearing their back feathers out.  There's always a screaming match back there when yet another rape is going on...I imagine his claws make it rather painful.  Anyone know where I can purchase some chicken saddles locally?  I've seen lots for sale in the US on the backyard bird sites, but would rather not have to ship.  I need about 5.  Do they have to be waterproof here on the coast?  It's getting cold and…See More

"HI there, I would love to take your americauna pullet . I have been looking for one or two more hens to add to my backyard flock , she would be placed with one 11 week old polish pullet who lives alone  in a fenced off portion of run/ henhouse…"

Free Americauna Pullet!

I have an Americauna pullet that needs a new home.  She was badly beaten up by a much larger bully cockerel (her brother).  I simply wasn't paying enough attention to what was going on in my chicken pen, and she paid the price for my carelessness with a nasty head wound. :(  It has now largely healed, but she will have a scar and may not grow feathers back in that area.  Otherwise, normal chicken; eating, drinking, preening normally, no signs of illness.  I'd like her to go to a backyard coop,…See More

"I am not a beekeeper, so I looked online.  This article proposes to wrap your hive in black tar paper and ensure proper ventilation, because dampness can kill your bees.  http://www.beeworks.com/informationcentre/wintering.html"

Freezing spring

Well, this spring has been pretty cold...how are people's hives getting on?  Is everyone feeding their hives thus far?  My new packages installed April 1st don't appear to be doing all that well, numbers are down.  How do we cope with the weather, as beekeepers?

"Excellent question Jennifer. Well, I'd say I'd like to see farms connect with neighbourhood villages (i.e. sell food to) in some organized way. There seem to be a variety of models - neighbourhood pocket markets, CSA's, pre-orders,…"

Starting farms: let's get this thing rolling!

As an 'outsider' to the city of Vancouver, it's hard to feel a part of the village.  Yet I believe teeny little acreages like mine--fallow for years, considered too small to be considered useful by conventional farmers-- have a huge role to play.  Here I am staring at 4 acres of Maple Ridge land, envisioning its future as an intensive market garden producing under the 19th century French system of deep-organic principles, fueled entirely by horse manure and growing four seasons ala Eliot…See More

What would you like to see improved in Vancouver or in your community regarding sustainability or resiliency? Do you have an idea for a new Transition project or activity?
Hard to say, since I'm in Maple Ridge. Out here, I'd like to see the notion of community improved. Don't particularly know my neighbours or what skills they have.
