About Me

I live in a small bungalow with my husband and young daughter. Last year we started growing vegetables, herbs and wild strawberries in our small backyard. And have been working on organizing a once lovely front garden that was left uncared for by the previous owners. Our little house was off to a good start when we moved in- with a rain water catchment barrel, radiant heat, and a compost bin. We have added attic insulation and replaced draughty windows which has almost halved our gas bills!

My daughter loves the Windsor Castle community flower garden across the street and we are excited about the Windsor castle community gardens planned along 37th Ave near our home. We encourage birds to visit our garden with our bird feeder. This year I am very much interested in adding beneficials to the garden and improving the biodiversity. I have a hoard of seeds to plant very soon. But sometimes I struggle to find the time to garden with a 1.5 year old daughter.

I work in international community education (I am an entrepreneur and run a program for local schools) and am very interested in social entrepreneurship, community development and food security on a local and global scale. I twitter at @janereitsma (my maiden name).

We had a good meeting last night - I showed the food segment of the In Transition film, we did a neighbourhood food networking exercise, and we all enjoyed some delicious blueberry cake...

I'm totally swamped right now, but hope to post my notes soon.

If you're ever interested in hosting one of these, please let me know - thinking it would be one way for you to attend.

Have a wonderful time planting!

Hi Jane,

Welcome to Village Vancouver! It good to see all the activities around food and community that you're engaged in.

We encourage members to get involved in transitioning to sustainable community on the basis of their interests, and there are lots of ways to do this - in villages, discussions, working groups, starting or collaborating on projects - whatever tickles your fancy.

I noticed that you've joined the Food working group (welcome), so it looks like you're already plugging in. (And it sounds like a good fit.)

I've set up a doodle calendar for an April Food group gathering at http://doodle.com/papgm68fz3vq4sfr. If you're interested in attending, please indicate your availability.

Be well,
Ross
