Village Vancouver

Vancouver's Leader in Transition toward Strong, Resilient, Complete Communities

Car Free Day 2011

Car Free Day in Vancouver is a mass celebration of grass roots and sustainable organizing for community connections and resilience. Begun as a protest against a massive roadbuilding campaign by the province of British Columbia (aka Gateway), Car Free Day now takes place on over 35 blocks of the city, rejecting cars from this road space for much of the day, and inviting over 125,000 people to enjoy this new public pedestrian space. Vancouver has no permanent pedestrian streets.
Here Village Vancouver has set up its demonstration sustainable village of 11 tents, supported by over 40 volunteers.
