Village Vancouver

Vancouver's Leader in Transition toward Strong, Resilient, Complete Communities

Energy Group

Our city claims its "emissions have already been reduced to 1990 levels and Vancouver is on track to meeting the Kyoto target (6% below 1990 levels by 2012)."

Is this a result of conscious and effective policy, or the de-industrialization of Vancouver and the flight of jobs out into the Fraser Valley? How is this performance measured, and is it meaningful? Finally, do you feel Vancouver has an adequate Energy Descent Action Plan (EDAP)?

This Village Vancouver Energy research and project group is charged with analysing and critiquing Vancouver's energy performance, making recommendations for improvements, and implementing them.

We have some homework first. We are currently analysing 3 EDAP or EDAP-related reports: The Kinsale EDAP drafted by Rob Hopkins, Portland Oregon's Peak Oil Task Force Report (3 years old!), and the Zero Carbon Britain report.

We need to attract a few more members, each of whom could tackle a component of the research. We also need to find a way to get comprehensive data. The City of Vancouver has pledged to open all its data resources, and we need to make sure we know everything our government does.

Transportation

If you have to leave your village, how will you get where you want to go? By car? Preferably not, both for your wallet and the earth’s sake. This category is for all discussions relating to how we all get around.

Housing

A human right? After food, most feel shelter is the most important necessity. A place of shelter is also the start of a community. This category is for all things relating to shelter, housing, affordable housing, homes, renewable heating systems, green buildings, heritage, and our built environment in general.
