Village Vancouver

Vancouver's Leader in Transition toward Strong, Resilient, Complete Communities

I know this overlaps with the Food Network thing.. but I wanted to ask specifically.

Who would be interested in working on a community garden in the west end? I know there's the one on Davie and Burrard - and theres another one that the YMCA organized.

Ive been thinking about proposing turning a section of the green area above the tennis courts at the west end of Haro (next to lost lagoon) into community garden. There is already a nice public garden there and water - and that green spaced is hardly every used. For our family at least, it would be a perfect location.

Thoughts?

I think it's a great idea & would love to be involved, Topher. However I am a beginner and would be working as a learner, not as an expert, or even a competent gardener/farmer. I'm useless "suburbia" like so many others. Lol! ;-) Bu, when I'm not working, t I DO want to learn all I can about sustainable living. :-)

Hi Topher,

Great idea. Are you coming to the Food Network event? Would be great to bring it up there, and at the WE Transition Village potluck.

Best,

Ross

Ditto- I'm totally interested but am a beginning gardener. Sounds like a great location to use as well. I'll be at the food network event so would love to discuss more then.

Hi Topher - it was good to meet you today in Westendia Village! Unfortunately that area beside the Stanley Park Flower Garden has recently been designated an off-leash small dog area. It's a good idea to turn it into a community garden, but we'd have to convince the Park Board, appease the neighbours (some of whom in the past have been apprehensive at the idea of gardens in the park) and the dog owners. It can be done of course, but, given what happened at Sunset Beach, it might take a bit of effort.

Oh well. That is another good use for what is an underused area!

I think there were many other good options "blooming" at the meeting, I dont think it will be long before more gardens appear in the vicinity.
