Vancouver's Leader in Transition toward Strong, Resilient, Complete Communities
Anyone renting and can't have a coop? You might consider contacting the garden sharing groups for people who own a back yard and can't/don't want to maintain it and offer to share it with gardeners. You could try the community gardens, but they can be a bit isolated at night and your hens would be more vulnerable to animal and human predation. The big sell would be free chicken manure and a compost shredding service. My hens are big help with shredding weeds for the compost-used to be such a pain. Now I throw all the weeds to the girls and rake it up along with the wonderful chicken poop once a week and it goes into the compost. The worms in my compost heap are like a Hitchcock film! Downside would be you might not have good control on what got fed to your hens. My own would be fine-they're picky. I think if you rent and you can't keep hens communal chicken coops may be the way forward.

Hi Stephanie,
I consider my girls pets so I would only consider putting them somewhere else in a real emergency, and only for short-term. But thanks for the idea!
I did find another place to live, but it might take a while to get a new predator proof coop built. DOES ANYONE HAVE A CHICKEN TRACTOR I CAN BORROW??
I'll post another to the whole group.
Thanks,
Alyssa
