Vancouver's Leader in Transition toward Strong, Resilient, Complete Communities
Hi folks,
My family is just starting out with backyard chickens. We've bought a coop (it's nicer than almost anything else in our yard!), and we're in the process of decking it out. Now all we need is some chickens! So, I'm wondering if anyone has a good source for young, sexed layers?
We're looking forward to learning from you all...and hopefully sharing some of our experiences too. Thanks, in advance, for any help you can give.

Yes! We got our really lovely Blue-laced Red Wyandotte from a woman in Langley who actually came and delivered the chicken to us. Her name is Tiffeny and her email is: [email protected]. We've had no trouble with the hen at all, and I think she really cares about her chickens. You can email her to see what breeds she has available...
Great! Thanks Arianne - I'll get in touch with her right now!
Hi Surya,
There's a woman out in the valley named Tiffeny that has just started breeding Copper Marans (they are a french bird that lays chocolate-brown eggs), lavender orpingtons and rhode island reds. Her info is
Tiffeny Papuc and Darren Streifel

I got my birds from Art Knapps in Surrey, and from another fellow in Surrey - Andrew ([email protected] ).
Both have point-of-lay birds, sexed. We did end up with a rooster the first time around, but Andrew took him back to use for breeding and exchanged for a laying hen.
Craigslist is also a good place to start. Good luck, and congrats for making the leap!
Thanks Kristi! I saw you were on this list...and thought I might get in touch to see how you're managing things. Arianne recommended Tiffeny as well, so I've just emailed her. I'll also check out the other sources you've mentioned. Craigslist has a couple, but it's hard to know how reliable/trustworthy they are. Always prefer to go with a direct recommendation. Thanks for sharing!
For sure - always happy to chat chickens! Come by sometime for a tour. The ladies are enjoying this nice weather we've had - hope you are too!
Tiffeny seems really great and like she truly cares about her birds. If I had room for another hen I'd definitely call her up. So excited for you and can't wait to hear how it goes!
If you're in the mood for a bit of an adventure, visit Fraser Valley Auctions (http://www.fraservalleyauction.com/) for its Saturday morning poultry sale. If you enjoy that, stick around and watch the sale of livestock in the afternoon. My kids preferred this outing to the petting zoo.

Great idea! We'll have to check that out!
