Anyone else interested in getting chicks for spring?

Know of a source that will take roosters back?

I can't raise chicks due to my cats, but am looking for a couple more birds as I lost two in the last 6 months. Likely looking for point-of-lay birds though. I've found some out in Langley, but the current avian flu movement restrictions are confusing and seemingly onerous. Anyone know any more about what you can/can't move under the current restrictions? All I can find is a very confusing and cryptic CFIA site.

Keep me posted if you do get chicks though! I might be interested in buying one off you if you raise them.

Hi Kristi,
Talked to Duncan yesterday and it looks like I might be raising some birds for others. This way we can more easily get the breeds we want. I'm going to check the poultry fanciers association and see what we might be able to get. I'll keep you posted.

There was a decent article in the 24 or the Metro a while back about the flu. Might already bo too old to be useful though.

I'm interested in getting some chicks. Does anyone know if otter co-op will be bringing in sex-links? Otherwise there's Beaupeep...

I called around this morning.

If Otter co-cop COULD bring in chicks, they'd have sex link. Unfortunately, there was just another outbreak of avian flu in Chilliwack, so they don't know. The said to call back in a couple weeks.

Beau Peep didn't answer, but since they're past Chilliwack I suspect they'll be in a bind (no pun intended) as well.

Spoke with Beau Peep.

They are OUTSIDE the primary control area, and they have PERMITS to transport.

This means that we can get birds there!

Currently, chicks are $8 - $20/bird depending on rarity.

We should decide what we want, email them, and then we'll get a quote.

Please email me if interested.

I'm interested!

Gah, I'm getting all hung up about permits. Did Beau Peep say if they have the General or the Special permit? Apparently to get point-of-lay birds from one farm to another, I need a Specific permit and the conditions are crazy (submitting weekly flock health records, pre and post transfer, testing, submitting a travel plan etc.

Sounds like chicks might be less hassle.....

They didn't say what kind of permit, just that they had what we would need to come pick up chicks and bring them back to Vancouver. I don't even know if they even have pullets, but they definitely have chicks. Also the chicks are sexed, meaning only maybe 1 in 20 will end up being roos/cockerels.

Please let me know what types you might want ASAP! There's a link to Beau Peep website in my earlier message. I suggest calling them if you're still concerned about the permit, or want to try to get pullets.

Thanks Alyssa. When I called Beau Peep earlier this year, they said that they only have chicks, and referred to any female chick under 10 weeks as a pullet. On their website, some of the chicks are sold sexed, and some (like the Copper Marans) are only sold unsexed, at least their calendar seemed to suggest that.

I had another farm in Langley that has 6 month old Marans and Americaunas that I'd like to get. I phoned the CFIA this morning and they're supposed to be sending me details of permit requirements for adult birds, so once I have that I can decide whether to go with older birds or with the chicks with you guys. Hope to let you know ASAP (tomorrow?).

I also sent you another private message.... more as soon as I hear from CFIA!

Thx!

Sounds good! Later this week or this weekend would be earliest I could get out there. Still need to confirm a driver as well.

Hi all - I'm all chickened up at the moment, but I had a great experience with the lovely folks at Wunderland Farm in Mission: http://www.wunderlandfarm.ca/chick-sales---services.html

All the best,
- James.

Hi everyone, we are picking up chicks at Beau Peep on Saturday, Feb. 21.

Last chance...
