I haven't had a problem with bugs in my coop. I think it may be because I have about 8" of sand in the bottom and a full roof over the coop. I think its just too dry for most bugs. I only clean the coop once a week, but its fairly big. I do add diatomaceous earth powder to the spot they like to dust bathe in every once in a while as a preventative measure, but have never seen any sign of mites. Another benefit of a full roof is that wild birds can perch on top and shed bugs, feathers and other contaminants into my coop.
Any luck finding that Alyssa? I'd be curious to see how well it works.
We went through a fair bit of diatomaceous earth last year after a mite-y July. I slapped some boiled linseed oil on the coop, which pretty well took care of their breeding grounds -- and kept the coop's youthful cedar glow.
