Village Vancouver

Vancouver's Leader in Transition toward Strong, Resilient, Complete Communities

I love Christmas but there are parts of it that just make me cringe. The rampant consumerism, waste, excess packaging.......

This year everyone is getting homemade, practical gifts like soap and preserves. We have solar powered lights for the tree and LED lights for outside. I think I'll try to get a real tree that we can plant when we're done with it this year too. We'll be eating chicken that we raised ourselves.

Would love to hear what everyone else is doing to lessen the impact of this season on the planet...

My family have agreed to have a 'buy nothing' christmas, although I'm still working on convincing my husband's side of the family! I'm going to be baking and cooking any gifts, using as many local ingredients as possible. I also am a print maker so I'll be printing my cards by hand so my friends and family have a little art piece rather than just another hallmark card.

I love that you're eating home-raised chickens, that is very inspiring, Julia! Next year I hope to have more home-grown things that I can use, but right now this is all in the first stages for me.
