Placemaking pioneer Mark Lakeman returns to Vancouver to anchor and guide a 9-month placemaking course designed to empower and facilitate community leaders in creatively reimagining the way space can be used in urban environments, building community and actively engaging citizens in the evolution of their neighbourhoods.
The course will be launched with a public talk February 7, proceeded by eight monthly sessions facilitated with local teachers that include Story and Place: A First Nations land walk and shared spaces, Placemaking Nuts and Bolts: Community and civic engagement to the 2nd Annual City Commons Placemaking Convergence: Hands on workshops offered for specific skills.
Placemaking is one of the most effective tools available for community building, because it builds social capital in multiple ways. First, Placemaking brings neighbours together as part of the project planning, consultation and construction processes. Once completed, the project itself is a legacy with ongoing community-building effects. “Repaired” (place-made) streets and intersections often serve as community gathering places for events such as block parties or even more spontaneous, year-round gathering such as at the Gather Round roundabout at St George Street and 10th Ave in Vancouver, which has been transformed into a “micropark” complete with lawn chairs.
Course participants will meet on a roughly monthly basis (on Saturdays) at various indoor and outdoor venue throughout Vancouver for core instruction, and will have the option to attend several additional, optional workshops as well to gather the more specific skills they will need in order to complete their chosen project.
