- Every and all of the above, for sure! In particular, I'm interested in exploring our town's bylaws, and considering approaching the council about allowing backyard chickens
- There's a saying that "Transition is not a spectator sport". It's true! Village Vancouver runs on people power, and engaging in activities and projects together helps us accomplish more. Which groups, networks, neighbourhood villages, or projects do you think you might be interested in getting involved with? And what knowledge, skills, resources or other assets can you bring to the mix? (Don't be bashful!)
- Village Vancouver coop Co-op. I grew up on a fully functioning beef farm as a girl, and my Mom, brothers and I kept a coop of 30 chickens for years. We would sell the eggs to neighbours, church friends and family, as well as use them ourselves. We always had the same hybrid breed, Red Rocks(Rhode Island Reds x Plymouth Rocks), which did very well in the Alberta weather until we would move them inside for the coldest of winter months.
I am now married with 2 daughters of my own, and have been wanting to get back in touch with my roots. Unfortunately, living within city limits means that we can not "legally" have backyard chickens according to the bylaws (There are some 40 families that currently have chickens anyway. We aren't one of them, however!). I am currently researching, and in the process of presenting the city with the Saanich bylaws regarding backyard chickens in hopes of Calgary doing the same.
