Welcome Louise!
If you are free next week, the first Tuesday of every month is a Village Vancouver neighbourhood potluck and presentation night at Little Mountain Neighbourhood House (on Main at 24th Avenue). The event is listed here (click this link).
The topic of the night is beekeeping, and two local beekeepers will be there (maybe with a hive) to talk about their experiences. Come at 6 for the potluck dinner or 7 for the hour-long presentation and discussion. (There will be lots of baclava in celebration of honey for whenever you come.) Little Mountain has a full kitchen and room big enough for 15-20, so its a reasonably convivial and cozy setting.
I hope you could come.
The very next early evening is the start of a major city-wide discussion group on local food security in light of peak oil. The expected outcome will be a Food "Energy Descent Action Plan" (FEDAP-pronounced 'feedap'). That takes place at the Museum of Vancouver, is listed as an event here, and is being sponsored by Village Vancouver. Perhaps you might be interested in that as well. PLEASE NOTE, for this event, you'll need to register. See the event posting for details.
