Village Vancouver

Vancouver's Leader in Transition toward Strong, Resilient, Complete Communities

One of our hens went hopelessly broody a few weeks ago so I stuck 6 fertile eggs under her to see what would happen. We converted an old dog house into a brooder with a plexiglass window on one side so you could see in. We'd get her up once a day against her will to stretch her legs and after a minute of squaking she'd go have a nice dust bath and forage around in the garden for a while before returning to her eggs. A week before the eggs were due to hatch, we moved her down to Southlands Farm where Jordan is doing kids farm camps so the kids could see the babies hatching. Sure enough, the hatched when all the kids were there. All 6 of them hatched too which was surprising since one of them had gotten out of the nest and was stone cold by the time i noticed it and put it back under her. Anyway... they are just adorable so you should stop by and see them if you are in the neighbourhood.

Congrats!
so cute, nice job
Julia those are some cute chicks. I have a broody hen right now that is hopelessly trying to hatch her sister's eggs each day before I remove them. I'm glad yours got to fully embrace her little chicken hormones to the fullest.
Nat's girls are growing up well. They have a swing-set and teeter-totter, and get many enthusiastic visits from the back-alley can-collectors of Commercial Drive.
Thanks everyone! When I went to let them out and feed them this morning, they got out of the tractor and were exploring around when Mom suddenly let out this sound I'd never heard before and stood up as straight as she could. The babies DISAPPEARED instantly. It was the craziest thing. I was looking right at them and suddenly they were GONE. I walked over and found them flat on the ground hiding in the grass. Very impressive I must say. Nature is so cool. She obviously told them to hit the deck and they did! You couldn't see them at all unless you were right on top of them.
Julia,

Are any of your chicks little roosters? I'm looking to get a coming of age rooster (meaning one that has not started crowing yet).

My hens are not laying very much right now. Last year we babysat a coming of age rooster and just having those pheromones around bumped up production 50%.
I think we have two roosters. We were planning on putting them in the pot but if you want to hang on to them for a while till they fatten up, that would be cool. Would make it easier for me to do the deed when the time comes. They are about 3 weeks old now and will be ready to go at the end of the month.
fantastic! we'll feed and house one and at the first sign of a crow, you can eat'it.
Could I get you to take them both? I have homes for the 4 hens so I'd like to keep the 2 boys together.
Hey, the house decided that if we were going to take in a rooster(s), house and feed them, we would want to eat them ourselves. I know you were planning on eating them yourself but it wouldn't really make sense for us to keep them and then not be the ones to eat them.
So cute
