Village Vancouver

Vancouver's Leader in Transition toward Strong, Resilient, Complete Communities

Hi all,

With the recent demise of Jean's feed and straw co-op, we are going to try something new. We're still working out the details, but it looks like the first delivery will be October 21-22.  (Straw only; organic feed is available from Mark's Pet Stop on 3rd & Commercial.)

I will post more as I know, Ross please cross-post to Hasting-Sunrise and Grandview-Woodland if possible.

Note: I will be collating the straw orders and arranging the bulk order, so contact me directly if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Alyssa

Yay! If we can find a friend to drive the straw to our place, which seems likely, we will probably order some for our fall garden mulching. =)

Hey Alyssa,

You can actually post directly to both villages.

Cheers,

Ross

Hi Alyssa,

Glad to see that you are still in Vancouver! and thanks for doing this. I would like to get some straw, so if you could add me to the order for 2 bales, that would be great, thanks.

Hi Alyssa - that sounds great, please count me in for three bales. I was going to trek somewhere this weekend (southlands? cloverdale?) but would rather go in on a bulk order.

Keep us posted on particulars (pickup time, cost etc.).

Thanks so much! Tamara

Hi everyone, Just to let you know I am still working on this. It turns out the place that delivers wants a minimum $40 delivery charge to East Van.

Base price is $8/bale plus tax unless we order at least 1640 pounds (~33 bales). So $9/bale plus delivery. If we get 15 bales ordered (so far I can think of at least 13 likely...) that would bring our cost to about $12 a bale. I know that is expensive, but it does avoid a long drive, which we'd all have to make separately otherwise.

If we can find somewhere to drop it in Southlands, the delivery charge is only 50 cents a bale. But we have to find that place and then someone has to go get it. (They assured me a dozen bales would fit in a pickup.) I MIGHT be able to have it dropped at my friend's daughter's horse farm. It would be delivered on a Friday, at no particular time.

So.. if people don't mind paying $12 a bale (I know I don't, to have it delivered to east van), then I will go ahead and place the order. Also, if we get over 33 bales ordered the tax goes away which makes up for part of the delivery charge. If anyone has any thoughts on this please let me know. I was hoping to schedule the delivery for October 21. Everyone would need to pick up that weekend, preferably Friday night or Saturday.

Hi all,

As I will be out of town for work this week I need to know if people are still wanting straw this coming weekend, at up to (gasp) $12/bale. (Sorry that's the best I can promise, hopefully it will be closer to $9/bale).

If I don't hear back from anyone soon, we'll likely be pushed out to Halloween weekend, which might be hard on everyone.

So - Ander, how many if any bales, and Tamara and Jill: is paying more worth not having to make the drive?

Alyssa

p.s. Only my cell phone for phone contact this week: 303-903-6714. For most people, texting is cheaper than calling long-distance. I can also call you right back if I'm available and you need to talk.

I'm asking my roommates and neighbors now about if & how much straw we'd like.... where is it being delivered? Somewhere in vancouver? We also have to arrange someone with a car to bring it to us =)

Also, should we can make a blurb to post on facebook / email out to interested people to see if more people want to order and we can bring the cost down? I think lots of us also use straw for mulching and composting.

Hi Ander,

It will be delivered to East Van, ~23rd & Main.

I'm going to follow Ross's suggestion and put on the neighborhoods (Grandview Woodlands and Hastings Sunrise) and see how many we get.

As mentioned, I am actually out of town right now, so this may get pushed out to the 28th. Does anyone have any thoughts on trying to make it work Halloween weekend? Or better to just wait until November?

Alyssa

Hey Alyssa,

I suggest posting to Neighbourhood Food Networks as well for much wider visibility. Other options: in Community Gardening, post as a blog, etc. I think we have an e-calendar/newsletter going out in the next few days -- I can see if we can get it in there as well if you want it reallllly widely broadcast.

Ross

23rd and main ... awesome.

I'm okay with it getting pushed back, personally, as mulching can easily wait. Those with chickens might feel differently.

Also okay with 12/bale ... for us it's the only way to get our hands on straw so, awesome!

Is it still possible to order straw bales? We'd like three bales for our house, please =)

Emailed neighbors and waiting to hear back from them.
Ander, I've now got you guys down for 3. Delivery will be next weekend.
