Duncan was over and took a good look at our chickens: it appears they have mites. He had some good advice on treatment: diatomaceous earth. Has anyone else dealt with this? Do you have additional advice?

Hi all,

Just noticed a few lice on my laying hen today - yuck!  Wondered how the DE treatment worked Asia.... any luck?

Laura, if you have more DE to spare, I'd love to buy a bit off you.  Anyone else with experience or comments, would love to hear from you too!

I read on backyardchickens.com that lice can't live off the body of the bird, so do I need to worry about doing the whole coop sterilization thing, like I'd need to do if they were mites?  I assume if the one hen has them, the other two likely do as well?  They aren't as friendly and I've never been able to pick them up, so treating them would be more difficult!

Thanks all!

Yes have lots of DE to share. Come on over - I will give you a call w. address! L
Thanks Laura, sorry I missed your call.  Will call you tomorrow - although the day is very busy and evening is booked.... maybe Tues.?
Tuesday is fine too.
Just grab 'em and stuff them in a pillow case with some delousing powder with their heads sticking out.... shake and bake till they've coated paying particular attention to their vent areas as that seems to be where the little buggers like to hang out the best. Definitely treat all of your birds but yeah, you shouldn't have to worry about the coop. Fun times!!!

What's in delousing powder?  I'm 9 1/2 months pregnant and don't really wanna touch the chemically stuff at the moment....where would I find it if I were to use it?  Will Diatomaceous Earth do the trick as well, or is it only as a preventative?  I've heard mixed info on that.
