Village Vancouver

Vancouver's Leader in Transition toward Strong, Resilient, Complete Communities

Thought we could post a brief 'here's me' by way of introduction.... so here's me :)

I live at 5930 Blenheim with my boyfriend, Ludo, two teenage boys (Monty and Michael), 2 dogs, 1 cat, 5 hens, 3 chicks and a whole lot of worms :)

We've been working really hard to convert our huge jungle yard into a productive urban farm and are looking forward to meeting other, like minded folks in the neighbourhood.

We're planting loads of fruits and veggies and have a lot of fruit trees & berries too. We just set up 2 rain barrels and are composting like crazy with the help of our newest pets.... a tub full of red wigglers.

We're very new at all this so I'm looking forward to learning more from more experienced people.

I live with my husband and 9 year old daughter on Mayfair Avenue, close to Dunbar. We rent, and have just moved in, so I'm experimenting with front yard gardening. I've put in 2 long raised beds along the sidewalk and a lasagna garden on the front lawn. So far, only so so, as there is far too much shade provided by the stately elms. I'm probably going to need a sunnier garden for my tomatoes and peppers. I've great aspirations for some serious canning this year.
We have 8 Dorking chicks, and are hoping that at least 4 turn out to be chickens. We've also got 2 cats.
I'm really keen on developing neighbourhoodties, but realize that as a newby, I've got a lot to learn about Dunbar and Vancouver.
Professionally, I'm an environmental engineer and have dedicated a lot of effort over the last 5 years to learn about climate change and peak oil. I've very keen to participate in awareness raising, as well as reskilling, and am very enthusiastic about the approach the transition initiative has trailblazed regarding coping with the huge challenges we are facing.
Hi Julia and Dunbar folk!

I grew up in Dunbar and live at on 16th between Highbury and Wallace in a collective family house. The are 5 of us in the upstairs and 3 below. We are planning a big balcony garden with lots of veggies. We have an old walnut tree, grape vine and apple tree in the backyard, as well as a few smaller walnut trees planted in the garden by squirrels!

Looking forward to meeting in person in the near future. We're not sure what to expect out of our garden this year (it's the first year in earnest that we're trying to grow as much food as possible) but any surplus we'd gladly share!

Aside, I work for the US national hub of the Transition Network, Transition US, helping out with outreach and communications. I studied environmental sciences at UBC and have been involved in non-profit work/community organizing since. Like Ann, I'm keen on getting things going in Dunbar and connecting up with others in the neighbourhood and coordinating efforts.

Hi everyone,

I'm your newest Dunbar neighbourhood member - my name is Kara, I live in Point Grey (on 13th between Crown and Camosen) and am really interested in this Village Vancouver idea. I rent with my partner Chris and am looking forward to meeting some fine folks in the area!

A bit about me - I work at the UBC Sustainability Office so sustainability is very near and dear to my heart. I'm very much interested in the transition movement.

Renting in Point Grey has brought me back to a space with garden access (hoorah!) so I'm learning how to grow food (again - it's an ongoing learning experience!). I'm an avid urban bike commuter, love the mountains (always up for a good scramble in the backcountry), really enjoy living near Pacific Spirit Park, love watching documentaries and enjoy potlucks, building community and have a high respect for community-driven projects and arts.

I've worked in sustainability for the past 4 years, first at SFU for the SFU Local Food Project and Centre for Sustainable Community Development, then for a sustainability education network (Walking the Talk) and now at UBC where I do work in supporting an amazing network of staff and student sustainability champions across campus. I've got a diploma in permaculture from Brighton, UK although I haven't practiced since I did my diploma.

My personal goal lately is to bring mindfulness into my life. I'd also love to learn canning.

I look forward to meeting you all hopefully in the near future!
Welcome Klara! Sounds like we have a lot in common. Looking forward to meeting you!
Hi Kara

I also welcome you to our group. We'd love to have you get involved in some of our organizing activites. We've started some canning workshops and have arranged for a regular movie night at St. Philips Church, starting Nov 22.

Look forward to meeting.
Ann (village coconvenor)
Looking forward to meeting you both!
