It's a relief to see someone blogging on this, though I don't find it simple. The viewpoint of seeing it as 'extrinsic' and 'intrinsic' is interesting. George Lakoff writes extensively on this using "Strict Father" worldview and "Nurturant Parent" worldview in his book Don't Think of an Elephant. Daniel Siegel writes about how our brains are made to interact with other brains, and how infants need interaction, not stimulation. Marshall Rosenberg also talks about this in NVC. So does Thom Hartmann.
I would love to have a group to discuss this. I think it's so important. If fact, from what I understand, the US rightwing politicians' understanding the importance of values has, since the 1980's been quite conscious and their strategies have been brilliant. They understand that reason is ruled by emotion, and they keep throwing the progressives red-herrings to distract them - and succeed admirably. <sigh>
I'll read the article you've indicated.
