Who's really to blame for the oil spill in the Gulf?

I'm so sick and tired of hearing about how evil BP is. Blame, blame, blame, blame. "Make them pay.... blah blah blah." This is like people who smoke and get lung cancer suing the tobacco manufacturers... or the fat guy who sues MacDonalds. I hope anyone who is pinning all the blame for this disaster on BP isn't driving a fossil fuel guzzling vehicle to the lynching. BP is in the Gulf because we keep buying their products. We are ALL responsible for this environmental clustercluck and the sooner… Continue

Coop Expansion, Outdoor Shower & Mulch... oh my!

Nice to have a couple of surprise sunny days this week huh? Ludo took Thursday off work to help me on the farm so between that and another productive sunny day yesterday, things are really starting to come together out there.

Wednesday was the Chickens 101 workshop with Jordan. It was fun and informative with a great group of people. A huge eagle made several passes through the sky above and we learned that this eagle had thinned Jordan's flock significantly lately. I'd had my own… Continue

Enough with the spring showers already!

Boy we are really paying for all that nice weather we had early in the month huh? Fortunately I have most of the big jobs I needed to do under control and I really need to spend the next 2 weeks studying for an exam anyway.

We participated in the 7th annual Blenheim Street Bazaar on Saturday with a yard sale and an "Open Coop." In spite of the terrible weather, we had a HUGE turnout... got rid of a lot of stuff and got a lot of people excited or at least curious about backyard… Continue

Meet me and my chickens on the CTV news at 11:30 tonight!

I only had 30 minutes warning so I wasn't as prepared as I would have liked to have been for the interview but hopefully I won't make us all look like total fools for wanting to have chickens in our back yards! It'll be on their web site tomorrow in case you miss it tonight. They were heading off the the council meeting after they left here.

What a fabulous week!

I got back from my week of field school on Saltspring late Sunday and spent all of last week playing farmer. I'll take some pics once the sun comes out again.

About half of our seedlings didn't make it. The stuff we planted right in the ground has done much better so I guess it isn't too cold after all. Won't bother planting the rest in pots. Still waiting to plant the tomatoes but everything else is either dead or in the ground now.

The beans on the bean teepee are doing… Continue

Last day in the yard for a while...

I have to go to Saltspring Island for the next week for a school thing so I was so happy to have such a beautiful day to play farming yesterday. Finally got the back bed weeded and transformed into our new berry garden. Planted strawberries and transplanted some very unhappy raspberry plants that were living in a shady spot in the front yard. Ran some netting all around it to keep the chickens and hopefully the dogs out. Check out the before and after pics:

Bring on the Rain!

We got our rain barrels set up yesterday. Had to clean out the gutters which was one of my least favorite jobs on my little farm so far but I find myself looking forward to the rain for the first time ever so that's cool. We were going to make them ourselves but the ones the city is selling were only $75 each and come with everything you need so we decided to go with those ones. They're made out of recycled plastic and look less ghetto than whatever we would have come up with on our own which… Continue

My boyfriend had an unexpected day off yesterday so we had a very productive day in the yard. We got lots more seeds started... more lettuce & green onions, more beans, tomatoes, herbs, cucumbers.... and lots more I've already forgotten about.

I won the battle against the morning glory that had completely taken over the raised bed I wanted to use as a herb garden but it was no easy task. Was left with some beautiful soil but I noticed that it had no worms in it so I mixed in a… Continue

Less Physics, More Farming!

I've p retty much been on house arrest for the past couple of weeks but I wrote my physics exam today and don't have another exam until the 29th so I finally have a little bit of breathing room. Really looking forward to getting out in the yard without feeling guilty because I should be studying! Hopefully the weather will cooperate but I'll get out even if its raining.

In spite of exams, we did manage to get some stuff done around here in the past couple weeks. We have a… Continue
