Is Anyone Looking For Gardening Space?

Having just read in the Sunday "Province" that there are lots of people still looking for gardening space, I am hoping that this post may interest someone. I have garden space available in SE Vancouver, around the 45th and Victoria/Knight area. The back yard has east and south exposure, and the front yard (with 3 raised beds) has south and west exposure. The back yard has raspberries that produce an awesome crop each year, and there is also a rhubarb plant, but aside from that, you are free to… Continue

Wanted: Photos and stories of WILD YARDS

I'm collecting photos and info on Wild Yards. For my purposes, this means a yard that contains useful plant communities requiring little or no human intervention to thrive. I'm more interested in yards that are loved and used rather than just neglected. Got any photos or stories to share? Know of a local WILD YARD that I should check out? Please let me know. Thanks :)

The Four Dynamics of Building the Transition movement

The Context: Hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent over many decades by marketing consultants and nonprofit fund raising consultants, university development and endowment departments and charitable trade associations to glean the four indisputable truths of reaching the customer, the donor or the joiner of a… Continue

Resilience

The reality is that a bold new energy and climate change policy would inevitably result in dislocations in certain industries and upset long-established ways of life in many regions; in addition, it would lead to higher prices for basic commodities such as gas, home heating oil, and food.

In societies where there are strong social safety nets -- universal healthcare, universal preschool, strong support for new parents, significant investments in public transportation, and sustained…

Return to Earth?

My honeysuckle and berries have survived. I guess this is good news of sorts.

I've been all over the place this past year, but not so much in the garden. As a matter of fact, the (un)garden has been converted to a gravel patch by my building manager...what was wrong with grass? It was messy.

I've taken it as a message from the universe: it's time to get wise. ;)

There is another patch of land I have set my sights on. Enclosed in concrete and metal fence it waits for the…

Backyard Herbalism gets some National Attention

Hello VV community.

This is my first blog on VV and i'm new to blogging and still on the fence about social media.  Anyway that's just to say that i'm a bit nervous about this.  It's taken a lot, a huge thing, in fact, to push me over the hump of jitters.

And that Big Thing is a Huge Celebration that I thought you folks would be able to really appreciate and share in the celebration.  In today's, Mon. Mar. 28, Globe and Mail there was an article featuring the…

Could Vancouver declare Food Sovereignty like this Maine town?

The town of Sedgwick, Maine, population 1,012 (according to the 2000 census), has become the first town in the United States to pass a Food Sovereignty ordinance.  In doing so, the town declared their right to produce and sell local foods of their choosing, without the oversight of State or federal regulation.

In view of the above incident, I am again…

NB Gateway freeway expansion cancelled despite signed contract

NB Gateway freeway expansion cancelled despite signed contract

By Eric Doherty, March 21, 2011

It seems that “Gateway” is a popular name for unpopular freeway projects. Like in the Lower Mainland of B.C., the provincial government in New Brunswick had been trying to push through an expensive freeway expansion scheme called Gateway over the objections of local residents.

The similarities between the two Gateway schemes is uncanny. There was even a bog that was threatened by…
