In which Vancouver neighbourhood or other community do you live?
Surrey
Please tell us which areas of Transition interest you. For example: growing more food/urban agriculture, relocalizing our economy/local currency, Permaculture, transit, energy efficient buildings, the arts, urban homesteading, preserving seed diversity, placemaking, potlucks, outreach, organizing events, community-building, having fun while saving the world, or...
I have a variety of interest - too numerous to list, but overall I'm passionate about gardening, nature and animal rescue.
There's a saying that "Transition is not a spectator sport". It's true! Village Vancouver runs on people power, and engaging in activities and projects together helps us accomplish more. Which groups, networks, neighbourhood villages, or projects do you think you might be interested in getting involved with? And what knowledge, skills, resources or other assets can you bring to the mix? (Don't be bashful!)
I was a Gold Medal winner in 1999 and 2000 for Gardening (Surrey). I also placed third in environmental gardening in Canada. My backyard is a habitat for birds, butterflies and bees. All this while providing foster care for numerous injured/ill/senior and disabled animals for several rescues.
Over the years I've become quite accomplished in building large enclosures so the animals can recoup in as natural a space as possible. I've also won the Funniest Magician of the World Contest in 99 and was nominated for entrepeneur of the year. 99 was my year I guess! I currently work with High Risk Youth so am interested in Youth Projects as well. In a nutshell, I'm Jill of all Trades but Master of none I'm thinking.
What would you like to see improved in Vancouver or in your community regarding sustainability or resiliency? Do you have an idea for a new Transition project or activity?
I'm no longer residing in East Van although I grew up there, my mother still lives in our family home and my son recently purchased a place near the Drive.
Due to having so many animals and wanting acreage we now live in Surrey but plan on eventually moving back to East Van within the next 5 years. I would like people who raise backyard chickens to make sure they treat them with the most humane treatment and give them the best care possible. Having been involved with Small Animal Rescue for many years I have seen many rabbits regulated to backyard hutches living a life of lonliness and neglect. People don't realize that living on wire mesh is hell for rabbits but easier to clean for humans. Rabbits have two kinds of poop and need to digest one of them which serves as natural antibiotic, for example. See something as simple as allowing people to know about that may stop them from using those horrible wire mesh bottoms. I am worried that once backyard chicken keeping takes off that some may become neglected or people might forget to add ventilation for them (especially if enclosed in their space over the winter). Out of sight out of mind mentality. I hope through education that people will respect these creatures. I have recently added chickens to my list of animals that live at my home.

Don't feel like answering all the questions now? No worries, just tell us briefly why you're interested in joining at this time, and you can come back and update your profile later.
I am interested in viewing chicken coops as I know from experience it's very difficult to obtain one so the majority of people build them themselves. I also would be open to passing along any info I've gained regarding raising chickens.

Cheers!

Hi Marianne, I am trying to organize a VillageSurrey where we can be more active pursuing our interests in establishing a sustainable society, economy, and environment and hopefully try to share our lives and resources to make it happen. Please contact me (preferably by phone) to let me know about your availability for an organizing meeting to take place within the next 7-10 days.
Cheers,
