Corinne,
Welcome to Village Vancouver!
We are currently organizing a "Vancouver Underground Market," which will actually be a legal, traveling pocket market of mostly very-locally-grown (or baked or made) food items and crafts (transported by cargo bicycle). We are targeting 2 days per week, starting in May, with visits to underserved neighbourhoods and coordinated with focussed social media/Twitter announcements of location and products for sale/barter/share.
We are also considering a system of tithing to enable us to provide some locally-grown, healthy food to needy families and persons at below or no cost.
Regarding the great Hastings Park, please join the Friends of Hastings Park or the Hastings Park Conservancy to help make happen what you wish. The largest East Van Park has been stolen, and we have tried for years to run a farmers market in the Forum or ANYWHERE in the park. The forces that occupy the park, however, do not want the public there...unless they are paying for something, like the Fair or Playland. It is a sad state of affairs that will require a real neighbourhood revolt and revolution to correct.
Keep a vision of the Forum building as Vancouver's next Granville-Island-style Urban Marketplace, with cafe's spilling out into the parking lots--which will be regreened--and plenty of space for local food activists and farmers to process and sell zero- or low-carbon-footprint organic produce. Right off the highway, this will be the place where Urban meets Rural. UBC will set up a demonstration farm there. And the West Coast Express will someday stop just down the hill from there, bringing Lower Mainland produce to market on electrified rails.
We can do this! Now join the Hastings Sunrise Village.
