Profile Information

In which Vancouver neighbourhood or other community do you live?
Mount Pleasant
Please tell us which areas of Transition interest you. For example: growing more food/urban agriculture, relocalizing our economy/local currency, Permaculture, transit, energy efficient buildings, the arts, urban homesteading, preserving seed diversity, placemaking, potlucks, outreach, organizing events, community-building, having fun while saving the world, or...
I am interested in urban gardening having only a small space myself. Permaculture, community gardens, canning, and potlucks sound like a great way to meet my neighbours. Also, I would love to learn more about beekeeping and having chickens. Transportation and sustainability are also issues that I follow.
There's a saying that "Transition is not a spectator sport". It's true! Village Vancouver runs on people power, and engaging in activities and projects together helps us accomplish more. Which groups, networks, neighbourhood villages, or projects do you think you might be interested in getting involved with? And what knowledge, skills, resources or other assets can you bring to the mix? (Don't be bashful!)
I think transportation is really important. Getting people out of their cars and walking or biking, enjoying their environment. I would like to learn more about permaculture and organic gardening. I am an avid cyclist and love to cook and grow food. I also enjoy organizing events. I am full of energy and look forward to contributing to making my neighbourhood ever more enjoyable.
What would you like to see improved in Vancouver or in your community regarding sustainability or resiliency? Do you have an idea for a new Transition project or activity?
Not allowing condos over 8 stories to be built. Having developers build housing that is similar looking to what Main St. already has instead of modernizing it similar to downtown.

Welcome to Village Vancouver and the Main Street Neighbourhood, Amanda.

As you can see, we are continuing to build this on-line community for Village Vancouver, and organize our wide-ranging activities more openly and collaboratively through this site. Please feel free to contribute to a discussion, attend or even enter a new event, or join a working group.

Also, please update your home page ("My Page" above) with a few more brief comments about your interests or a short bio. This will help us all connect with people with similar interests in sustainability, or any other activities. Maybe find a nice photo to upload, too. :-)

You are closest to what we call the Main Street Neighbourhood (or 'Hood), the local, walkable village under the umbrella of Village Vancouver.  Our village, which is convened by Randy Chatterjee (me) and Jason Mertz, is comprised mostly of people within Mount Pleasant and Riley Park.   We sometimes hold large events at Heritage Hall (Main at 15th Ave) and meet every month--usually the first Tuesday--for a potluck and workshop at Little Mountain Neighbourhood House (Main at 24th Ave).   Next month it is on April 10th and the event description is here.

We are active beekeepers and many members also have chickens.  We are also working to establish a collaborative community garden in our area, which is a new model not based on individual plots but all participants working together in the whole space and sharing the produce.  Market gardens are another model to check out, and we hope to establish one in our neighbourhood as well.

You can keep in touch best with events within the Main Street Neighbourhood by clicking on this link and joining this Village's page.  We post local notices to this group approximately twice a month.

There's lots to get involved in, but we're an all-volunteer organization, so some individual initiative is needed.
