How bout ducks? I've been thinking duck for their excellent slug eat abilities.
  • Julia Smith

Ducks aren't allowed although I don't see why not. They are friendlier, can produce just as well as chickens and don't make as much noise.

I need more scratch. Anyone need anything from the feed store?
  • Dane Chauvel

Scratch is a mix of grains with either corn or peas (my birds prefer the corn option). In addition to scratch, you can feed your hens layer pellets which will promote egg production. The closest feed store to Vancouver is probably Roddicks (http://www.roddickfeedandfarm.com/feed.htm) in Ladner. They are very knowledgeable and will let you know what else you need (a small bag of oyster shell and of grit would be recommended).

    Hi All
Just received this posting from the 4H club, in case anyone is looking for chickens.

    From: "dykeman"
    Subject: 4-H fundraiser chicken sale

We have a big 4-H auction coming up on Sept. 20th at McClary stockyards. I have attached a copy of the flyer. 100% of the money is going to our 4-H club. One of the things going through the auction are 3 Rhode Island Red ready to lay (or just started laying) hens. Healthy fully vaccinated etc. We also have several project birds; As well as 99 whole grain, naturally feed roaster chickens, that are Federally inspected and shrink wrapped. going up for auction. They we raised as a group market project.

We are accepting proxy bids, but would also love it if anyone can make it out! It should be fun!

    Hi Chicken Folk,

Ameraucana Available:  I just sold a coop to a young man near Clark Dr. with a nice array of birds and he's downsizing his flock a little.  He has an ameraucana that lays...brown eggs.  I have met this bird and she's a healthy layer - I think about a year old - $20.  Call me up if interested 604-329-3863.

Hey all, I'm wondering if anyone in my neighborhood (near Broadway and Fraser) would be willing to show off their chickens and coop. I used to have some chickens in Victoria and would like to get some for our place in Vancouver but my landlord wants to see first-hand how it works. Anyone interested in showing off their chickens (this weekend)? Please let me know.
  • Alyssa K

4th & Woodland you can come see my chickens any time (not far from Broadway & Commercial). My landlord let me do it, and I live in an apartment! My situation is not typical though. Send me a message here (I have to be your 'friend' to send you a message). I am supposed to be at the workshop (Ecodreaming) all day tomorrow but definitely home Sunday.

I just found this sight today. Our coop is nearing completion and we will be looking for 6 youngish birds, maybe 24 weeks or so?  Any suggestions where to buy them?  I'm in Kits, are there any of you with hens

in this part of town?  I would love to see your girlies, your set-up and ask lots of questions.  First time for me. I'm reading all the books but am such a greenhorn!  I'm delighted to find this community.  If anyone is going to the auction in Langley I would love to come along. (I don't drive).  Thanks,  Lorraine

  • Julia Smith

Welcome Lorraine! I'm just at 43rd and Blenheim and there are two other members with chickens a few blocks from me so you should come out for a coop tour! In addition to our backyard flock, I run a small chicken farm in Richmond and Southlands with two other members. We currently have 227 baby chicks so you better come see them while they're still little and cute! I can probably help you fill your coop. Are you looking for any breeds in particular?
  • Kristi Tatebe

Julia - wow, 227!  What breeds did you get?  I'll likely be ready for birds in a month - can I request 3 lovely ladies?
  • Lorraine Krakow

Hi Julia, I would love to see your chickens. Sunday would work for me or anytime that is good for you.  lorrp3@gmail.com    Thanks, Lorraine
  • Julia Smith

We're probably keeping all these girls as our new laying stock but I can help you find some when you're ready Kristi. I have my hands full this weekend but some time next week would probably work for a visit Lorraine.
  • Lorraine Krakow

Just putting the last touches on our little chicken coop. In the next week or two we need to buy 6 young layers; probably two different kinds, 12 to 16 weeks or so? New to this so advice is needed and appreciated. We live in Kits. Where to buy young hens, best place to pick up feed and water dispensers etc?  Lorraine

  • Julia Smith

Send me an email to julia at city farm girls dot ca and I'll hook you up with my favorite chicken pimp :) You can get feed and all the supplies at WestWay feed in Delta (closest place).

I'm so proud of the cute coop David made.  Almost everything was from the trash or reclaimed...except the wire and shingles and a few 2x2s.  Now to get some feathered ladies...
  • Kristi Tatebe

Super cute Leanne!  Way to go you and David!  I should be ready for some ladies in a couple weeks too.

  • Duncan Martin

Beautiful coop Leanne. Those'll be some happy chickens.
  • Lorraine Krakow

We are ready for 6 young layers or almost old enough. None of the leads I've had, including Craig's list are working for me. If anyone hears of any please let me know
  • leanne gypsy

We're ready too!  Let us know if you find any more leads...and we'll keep you posted too!
