Village Vancouver

Vancouver's Leader in Transition toward Strong, Resilient, Complete Communities

Hello all,
Some news from the farm front - wheat prices have had a spike and Canadian Organic Feeds expects that the price for feed will be higher for this order (and possibly generally). On our last order cycle, everyone unanimously agreed to pay $14/bag (instead of $12.19/bag)  so we could provide some payment to Jim at Cedar Isle Farm, who organizes the feed and provides us with the organically grown straw.

Organic Straw bales           $7/each
20kg bag organic feed        $14-16/each (price to be confirmed)
Delivery charge                    $50.00 = split per # of items in the order
(this seemed fair, please let me know if you have other ideas)

In the past, Jim sent out some samples of rolled oats and wheat treats for the hens to try. I have some oats (for sprouting & feeding) that I'm happy to offer for a dollar per large ziploc bag, if you'd like to try before committing. Otherwise, please indicate which you would like to order and we'll contact Jim and figure how big a bag and the cost. (Last time the 50lb bag of oats was $25.00).

Delivery usually happens mid-week and since the pallets occupy a lot of space, prompt pick-up is really important. If you could order enough to see you through the months between orders, we will try to order on the dates listed below (hope this will make planning easier!).
April 3 - delivery April 14th
June 5
August 7
November 6  (I tried to miss the harvest, and December, when people are
busy and scatterbrained)
February 5, 2012

We don't yet have a depot in place, so if you are able to offer a covered dry space that can hold two large pallets, please let me know. (I am working on a location now, near King Edward and Main, but it may or may not be ready).

Orders are DUE by Sunday, April 3rd, midnight.

Please share this with gardeners (who may need straw) and other chicken folks.

If you have any questions, please email me. If someone wants to set up a car-pool delivery board on village vancouver, that would be great!

(Side note - we store extra bags of feed in a rubbermaid garbage bin, and it seems to be rodent free and unharmed).
Hope your hens are all well,
Jean

Penny,

Generally, people pay when they pick up their stuff, we've never had a problem, so we'll keep going with that for now. After I get all the payments I send a cheque to JIm.

So, I will put you down for

2 bales

2 feed

2 ziplocs

I forgot to put my email address on the last post, jkindratsky(at)primus(dot)ca

And I will add you to our regular email list for future notification.

Cheers,

Jean

I would love to get in on this, but I have a question about amounts. We're getting 3 hens at the end of May, so how many bags of feed would we need to see us through to the August 7 order?

Thanks!

Arianne

Arianne,

Our three hens went through about 1 bag each month. There is another order date on June 5th. It would depend when your hens arrive.

cheers,

Jean

I would be interested in about 4 bales of straw for my potato beds. Where are you located?

Cindi,

I am near Kind Eward and Main, but we may need to deliver to 56th and Main. Not sure yet. Please send me your email and I can add you to our usual order list and let you know when the bales arrive.

Thanks,

Jean
