Village Vancouver

Vancouver's Leader in Transition toward Strong, Resilient, Complete Communities

This morning while my chickens were getting their little walkabout before I left for work (I let them out of the run when I'm home to stretch their wings), a coyote came close enough to scare one of them into the neighbor's yard and the rest into the coop.

As far as I know, nobody was hurt, but it was a good thing I heard them squawking or I suspect at least one would have disappeared.

This was around 7AM near 4th & Commercial, but I have also seen coyotes in the park farther south on Woodland.

Let it be a reminder that even in Vancouver, chickens should not be outdoors unsupervised, even during the day, unless they are in a completely enclosed area.

Have a safe and good weekend everyone.

I stopped letting mine out after I discovered that chickens are not completely flightless. I was putting them in a sort of play pen of wire with no floor and no roof. Sticky hummed the first bar of "born free" and flew over the top and freaked us out trying to catch her. In addition to the coyotes-who by the way use the cut line for the train tracks as a highway as well as living in trout lake park-we have cats. Our neighbor has a Bengal cat-superb hunter. He is working up to running past me when I open the coop door to walk in. I have taken the super soaker water gun out to the coop....we'll see.
