I will be arranging for local delivery of some great backyard chickens so please contact me if you would like any so I can make arrangements with the hatchery.  Post here if you have any questions as someone else likely has the same question. The following breeds are available and are all friendly, good layers that bear confinement well so are well suited to city living:

Silver Grey Dorkings

Barnevelders

Buff Orpingtons (very friendly and good winter layers!)

Polish (golden laced, white and white crested)

Americaunas (these cool looking birds lay green eggs!)

Old English Game (very tiny bantum birds)

Silver Laced Wyandottes:

The Barrnvelders are a beautiful looking Hen, I would love a few of these birds.
what great looking birds! I would love one, but I haven't introduced a new bird with the others yet. Any ideas on which one might be best to try? Perhaps the Buff Orphington?
My limited experience with Buff Orpingtons would suggest that yes, that would be an excellent choice. They are so easy going. We had one for a while and it was the ONLY one who could get along with a crabby Americauna we also had. They are known for their good nature. I've heard that the best way to introduce new birds to an existing flock is to do so in even numbers. So, for example, if you have 3, you would take one of the existing birds and coop it up with the new bird for a day or two, then introduce the two of them back to the other two.
good tip!

I'll get one hen, a Buff Orphington sounds lovely. I have two Barred Rocks that are not always so nice. My Red Rock, on the other hand, is the most affectionate and laid back one. When are you planning on getting them? Do you know the age?
Hey Vicky! Welcome back :) tomorrow (saturday) is the big chicken adoption party at my place. All the Buffs are currently spoken for but I'll try to offer something else to the people who were planning to take more than one. Will let you know if I can keep one for you. If not, I will email you if anyone is left.
thanks Julia!
probably easier if you use my other email.
I'm going to be out of town until the 25th and I don't have any more chickens anyway but Anne-Marie and Lance run a wonderful little hatchery out in Delta and they have about 40 pullets available now including most of the breeds mentioned above. Please contact them directly if you need some residents for your coop!
