Village Vancouver

Vancouver's Leader in Transition toward Strong, Resilient, Complete Communities

Hi, I live in Trafalgar Housing coop (corner of 5th and trafalgar) and looking at adding veggies to the landscaping - much of which is in partial/heavy shade.
Thinking about swiss chard (bright lights). Last year I bought a couple of different bedding plants, but this year thinking one crop might be best for each area. (to keep it clear and know there's always something there.)
I'd be interested in a plant swap / seed swap as part of Kits Car FreeDays - I'll be helping coordinate something in the 2600 block West Fifth Avenue.
Interested in kids books on seeds (many of which are at VPL) - go to www.ucvenvironment.wordpress.com

Partial to heavy shade is a good place for salad greens. Have a look at some of the red and speckled lettuces. They're quite lovely as border plants. I love Bright Lights too and you can now buy the individual colours from West Coast Seeds.

Some of the Asian greens are quite ornamental too. I love Giant Red (also called Osaka Purple) and mibuna which looks almost palm-tree like.

Hope this helps!!
