Village Vancouver

Vancouver's Leader in Transition toward Strong, Resilient, Complete Communities

Malin, let's see if this works...

Malin Hansen started the discussion "Plastic recycling" in
the group Kitsilano Transition Village on Village Vancouver

------------
I am wondering if there is enough interest in Kitsilano to
start a plastic recycling depot.

A company called Pacific Recycling Depots
http://www.pacificmobiledepots.com/locations.php
accepts pretty much all plastics that the City of Vancouver
doesn't take (soft plastics, styrofoam etc).

It is quite cheap to recycle ($5/large garbage bag) if you
are able to bring your stuff to Britannia Community
Centre on Commercial Dr. They would however pick up
from Kitsilano if we can gather enough plastics, i.e. at
least six large garbage bags worth of plastic $30 worth.

Therefore it is quite common for neighbourhood groups
to arrange a common pick up, i.e.neighbours meet
once a month a day or so before pick up and gather all
the plastics in big garbage bags. Then one person
keeps the bags until they get picked up.

I think we would need about 10 households to be
involved. The next pick up is Dec 9th. Please let me
know if you are interested in being involved. You can
e-mail me at hansen@zoology.ubc.ca

Thanks,

Malin

Hi,

There is a group on facebook 'beyond the blue box' that is run by my Kitsilano neighbour that uses Pacific Recycling.  He does this as a fundraiser - it's located at the Britiania community centre (same group you mention).  There has been a couple of interested people on this site asking for a Kitsilano location instead of having to drive all the way to East Van.

You may want to check out their post dated July 6 about creating a new location in Kits.

Cheers

Janine

I'm interested, thank you!

I'm interested.

Hi all,  The plastic recycling pick up will be postponed until January since it seems most people don't have enough plastics at this point. The pick up will be arranged for Friday January 20th, but we will collect all plastics on Thursday January 19. The collection will take place at Mary's place from 6:30-8:30pm (exact address and directions will be sent out to those who RSVP).

There will be a Kits Neighbourhood potluck the same evening starting at 6:30pm. Please come by and drop off your plastics and/or share a meal with neighbours.  In order to prepare for this event please start saving your plastics today! I have attached an information sheet which has a list of plastics that can be recycled through this project. All plastics have to be clean and dry and sorted (or at least easy to separate). The cost per person will depend on how many people participate and how much plastics we collect, but will range from $2-5.

Please RSVP by sending an e-mail to hansen@zoology.ubc.ca by Sunday January 15. Include an estimate of how much plastics you will contribute, i.e. less than half a garbage bag, half a garbage bag, a full garbage bag or more than a garbage bag (but make sure to focus on plastics that cannot be recycled through the city program). Feel free to pass this message on to others who may be interested. Also, don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions.

Thanks,  Malin
