Notes by Lisa Slakov  from last meeting:

Hi all,

Was great to get together on Tues and remember how fun the whole block party/car free day event is! Also wonderful to have our new participants- Karen, Louise and Joanne. Mel- sure hope your hamstring is recovering well. For you newbies, might want to have a look at our "toolkit" for block parties to get an idea of what happens- http://www.carfreevancouver.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/block-party-planning-and-ideas-tool-kit-revised-april-15.pdf . Got it off our website http://www.carfreevancouver.org/locations/kitsilano/host-block-party/ and notice that even this toolkit PDF has a few items that need updating on it.

We discussed a number of things and I think that this is a summary (please add or subtract as needed!):

Action Items from meeting:
  • Ross- to discuss our budget with Car Free Van group (mother group), including some $ for cards to hand out with our website PLUS ensure that we're included on insurance coverage
  • Ross- to contact Kits House to see if we can have one of their potlucks as a venue for connecting with Kits neighbours on this or at least to let people at one of the potlucks kno about this
  • Karen- to look into facebook and perhaps other social media connections on our webpage although a quiick look at our webpage and it seems to me we might already be connected??
  • Lisa- to prepare an email for Kits Residents Associations about helping us out and/or hosting a block party. Lisa and Mel to get out to Kits Res Groups
  • Lisa- to contact John for his communications to previous hosts, list of hosts and contact info etc
  • Lisa- to contact City of Vancouver to get the ball rolling for this year
  • Kevin- to look into doing a fun "attention getting" event in parking spaces in Kits where we make a mini block party. Good starting point likely Van Public Space Network
  • all of us- look at list below and see what else we can take on, think about anyone we know who might be able to help us with these items, and think about ways to reach out to new hosts
Still needing lead people - note all of these items we can provide all required info of course!:
  •   keep up the website- update & improve if possible (NOTE: just checked website and it does need updating and, as Karen mentioned, could use some photos etc! see http://www.carfreevancouver.org/locations/kitsilano/   ). Also, as mentioned, our toolkit PDF needs updating
  • arrange for cards to be made that entice to our event and give our website
  • monitor and respond to emails to our group (very low volume)
  •  communicate with hosts and potential hosts- answer questions, provide direction -MEL- we were thinking of volunteering you for this as it seems to be your forte!
  •  accept and review completed  block party applications, communicate with hosts as needed re applications
  • make arrangements for barricades  and barricade transportation for actual event (we have all the info re the company etc)
  •  follow up event- ask for photos to add to website, ask for feedback on event etc
Please think about the above and let's chat on email re this and then plan our next get together from there.

Cheers,

Lisa

Thanks, Lisa, and welcome Mary! I totally agree -- block parties are one of the best ways I know to meet neighbours and make cool connections...and they're so easy to do!

I'll post some updates from my end shortly.

Ross, great avenue for letting people know about block parties and Kits Car Free Block Parties Day- June 19th. Always such an incredible way for people to meet and make long term connections with neighbours you otherwise often don't even know exist!

I think we most urgently need immediate (quite small) website updates and someone to exercise a bit of creativity and create cards with our website that we can hand out to people as we go through our daily travels.

Getting started this year. To do list (circulated for discussion at 1st meeting):
a.. promotion- media, community events, talking it up, maybe neighbourhood group lists, maybe hitting the street and telling people about it, coming up with other ideas
b.. communicate with the Car Free Vancouver lead group and organizer
c.. communicate with the city of Vancouver as necessary (I could do this, at least at 1st as I've  already been doing it)
d.. keep up the website- update, improve if possible, monitor and respond to emails to our group
e. communicate with hosts and potential hosts- answer questions, provide direction
f.. accept and review completed block party applications, communicate with hosts as needed
g. make arrangements for barricades and barricade transportation for actual event
h.. follow up event- ask for photos  to add to website, ask for feedback on event etc
