Beekeeeping is part of the Village Food Group and Neighbourhood Food Network

Dear beekeepers and other beekeeping enthusiasts,

I encourage you to become part of a neighbourhood group where you can meet in person with other beekeepers regularly (or with people interested in beekeeping). Steve and I are part of a group of about 10 beekeepers that was created last spring. We had a couple of get-togethers last year and it was invaluable (and fun!) to learn from each others’ experiences. So far I have responses from people who would like to start a group in the Commercial Drive area, Dunbar and North Vancouver. I suggest creating groups based on where you live - having people that live near by who can lend a hand (or hive box if your bees swarm!) can be very helpful.

Please note that during Anna's absence, you may contact Steve Sandve (beekeeper) or Cylia for questions and help furthering ideas related to beekeeping.  (Click on the links at their names above to open up their Village page, and write them a note on their Comment Wall.)

Hi everyone,
We are in need of a queen excluder and 5 smaller sized frames for one of the hives at the Purple Thistle Center. If anyone has any extra ones that aren't in use, we would much appreciate them as a donation, trade (we have some bigger sized frames) or purchase. If you have any, could you email beeez(at)purplethistle.ca to get in touch with someone in the group? Thanks!

Cedar Cottage Garden will be constructing its beehive fence on Wednesday, July 4 from 630-9 pm. If you are interested in helping out or checking out what we're doing, please drop by the garden and/or join us to lend a hand. Many hands makes the work easier.

Re: first Kits Urban Bees Collective meeting

Do you have an event page for this which I may RSVP to? Would very much love to come.

The first meeting of the Kits Urban Bees Collaborative = beginning our classes with Markus Storhas of Bee in Bloom Apiary will be this coming TUESDAY - JUNE 19th, 2012 from 6-8 pm at The Billy
Bishop VFW Hall, 1407 Laburnum Street.

(Just off Cornwall Avenue, between the Kits Beach and Maple street stops of the #2 & #22 buses)

*** Please RSVP yes or no ... so we know about how many people to expect for the Tuesday meeting. ***

This first meeting will be bee theory and questions and the second
meeting will be Friday when Markus shows us one of his hives at his house.

The ongoing class, which will meet several more times over the next
two months, will be limited to a small group of folks who will be raising bees and / or helping to take care of the Kits Urban Bees Collaborative's hive.

No previous beekeeping knowledge is necessary just a commitment to follow through with the hive tending.

This fabulous opportunity has been made possible through a Greenest City Fund neighborhood small grant, administered through the Kitsilano Neighborhood House, with funds from
the Vancouver Foundation.

Look forward to BEE ing with you,

Pia Massie

Hi There,

I am wondering if there are any VV beekeepers whose hives overwintered well without treatments and would be willing to sell me 5 full frames:

Two of Capped Brood

Two of mixed Honey and Pollen

And 1 of Eggs?

This is called a Walk Away Split.

I will replace your frames with new ones. Name your price.
Thanks so much,
Asia

Hi Everyone,

I received a call from a man named Morley the other day. He’s got a bunch of queens and packages coming in this Wednesday. The packages are 4 pound packages, at $215 each. And if you want queen in them they will be an additional $15. He will also have queens available for $18 each.

Below is all his contact info. They are bees from Western Australia, and queens from Eastern Australia, all a type of Carniolan, sorry I can’t remember the exact kind.

You will have to meet him at the airport if you want to purchase.

Feel free to let anyone you know about this, I think he’s stuck with a large number of them that he can’t get rid of.
