Village Vancouver

Vancouver's Leader in Transition toward Strong, Resilient, Complete Communities

I moved this to the disscussion forum to make it easier to follow the thread.

Strathcona Bees asked:

I'm interested in how many people are feeding their bees now.  I know some are against it.  If you are feeding what bee food and what kind of feeder? Also, I had a low mite count this year and understand that a number of Vancouver beekeepers experienced the same. Did anyone have a mite problem?  I am being overly cautious and sugar dusting now to remove mites.

I am not feeding as I left quite a bit of honey in the 2 deeps that i have on both my hives. I have a few frames of capped honey in the freezer for future feedings.  No mite problem but will continue to monitor mite drop levels.

Bruce, I am probably going to wrap my hives with the roofing paper and i am adding a moisture quilt that I saw on Honeybee Suite. They are cheap and easy to build and from what I have read work quite well in our climate (rain and more rain)  Any one else out there?

Steve

Are you overwintering in 3 deeps? or will you be reducing to 2 or 1 box later?
