Village Vancouver

Vancouver's Leader in Transition toward Strong, Resilient, Complete Communities

City Repair's 12 annual Village Building Convergence in Portland, by all accounts the most amazing time to visit Portland in all its amazingness, is coming up from May 25th to June 3rd!

Here's a description of the event from their website:

12th Annual VBC in brief: We will come together to create benches, community kiosks, gardens, street paintings, tile mosaics, and more! Come join your neighbors as they bring to life the natural building, permaculture, and public art projects that they’ve been planning. Learn valuable skills for urban sustainability and social regeneration while celebrating the creativity and diversity of our wonderful city! Read more about the VBC...

During the day, you will have the opportunity to get involved with creative, community designed placemaking projects happening all over the city. There will be natural building, gardening, art, and many other fun things to do and great people doing them with you! This aspect of the event is always free.

During the evening everyone will gather at a central venue for a night of wholesome food, presentations by leaders in the forefront of positive change, and exhilirating musical performances from local bands. Prices here range from free to $30, with worktrade available most nights.

I have decided to go from May 25th to 28th, and I thought it would be cool to see if anyone else from Village Vancouver wanted to head down as well. Transportation options include both train and bus; I'm planning on going by bus as it can be significantly cheaper, especially if more than one person travels together to take advantage of Greyhound's companion fare. If two of us were to go together, the round trip cost would be $96/person, and this decreases to $86/person if we are three. Homestays are available for $20/night nut must be requested prior to May 16th.

If you are interested in going down to Portland at any time during the Village Building Convergence, please add your comments here and let's use this discussion to coordinate our travel!

Thanks,
Jordan

A bunch of VVers, including myself, went down last year, and it was a lot of fun! Our group (comprised of Kits and Main St. Villagers) participated in building a kiosk at a healing centre, visited the reclaimed traffic circle with the famous tea station, went to Powell's Bookstore, checked out the food carts on Mississipi Ave, and took a really inspiring tour of Justice Village.

I highly recommend participating in the Convergence.

Cheers,
Ross

P.S. Many of you (there were a couple hundred in attendance on the Friday evening, and over a hundred on the Saturday) who participated in the Eco-Dreaming Vancouver event Village Vancouver co-organized a couple months prior to last year's VBC may remember that it featured Mark Lakeman, one of the co-founders of City Repair. We hope to bring Mark up for an another event, and we've been talking about starting our own Village Building Convergence in Vancouver. If you're interested in helping create this, please let me know, either here or at ross@villagevancouver.ca.

Hi Jordan,
Thank you so much for sharing all this information. I too, would love to attend!
However, it would be from the 31st onwards. Happy to travel by bus and also looking to see if anyone else interested in heading down for the last few days?
Dana
