Vancouver's Leader in Transition toward Strong, Resilient, Complete Communities

Local or organic? Which is more important to you? Does importing food from around the world threaten our ability to feed ourselves, or does it threaten the earth because of the need to burn fossil fuels to transport food over great distances? How do you feel about organic certification? Is it clear what you are getting in that organic tomato? And what you definitely aren’t?

Local, but non chemical is better than imported from afar organic.
Tehere is no "life" left in that organic broccoli that comes up from California.
We need to encourage growers here and promote winter garden products.
Rapini is better and it is hardier and just as nurtitious as broccoli.
Broccoli got a big sell by nutritionists and newspaper columinists over the years but for greens in the winter, sprouts are just as good.
We need to support smal freezing, drying operations of local organic produce . so that we purchase from local ag people year round.
The attached article from the Dietitians of Canada reviews some of the evidence on the healthfulness of local foods. I thought that you might be interested in the arguments made and the sources cited.
