Event Description

April Reeves is a long time farmer and gardener in both urban and rural settings. April has owned 4 large “integrated” farms in Alberta and BC that included: horses, vegetables, cut flowers, hay crops, trees, Morel mushrooms, ginseng and soils. She now operates Carrot Creek Urban Farm in Richmond. Carrot Creek grows food for several other families, plus sells thousands of veggie plant starts in the spring. The entire urban farm is set up to scale down or up.

Carrot Creek’s mandate is to show budding urban farmers what works and what doesn’t. Various vegetable plants are grown for success  - and failure. This allows the participant the opportunity to experience the pitfalls and problems associated with growing food, and reduces the long self-learning curve. Participants see first hand the results of poor management as well as good management.

We are happy to announce our first workshop as part of our urban farming workshop series funded by Vancity! This workshop series is both for urban farmers - to help increase their sustainability as urban food businesses, and urban farmers - for members of their community!

Think it's too late in the season to be learning about growing tomatoes? Think again! The timing couldn't be better. What a great time to see tomato plants in all their glory! Join Urban Farmer April Reeves as she walks you through all stages of tomato growing and also discusses infrastructure for growing tomatoes both outdoors and in a greenhouse. April will discuss starting tomatoes, soil and plant care throughout the season, and infrastructure for growing tomatoes. The workshop will be held at April's home urban farm, so you can all see the amazing infrastructure she is using!

This workshop is for everyone: urban famers, home gardeners, community gardeners; heck, even rooftop and balcony gardeners!

Cost: $18.41 (scholarships available - if needed)

This was an awesome workshop. April is a good educator and very knowledgeable. I loved her farm setup and I learned a few things too....

Directions to get there:

Easy access from Arthur Lang or Oak st. bridge. Hudson is the main road into Burkeville, off of Russ Baker Way (#2 Rd). Go all the way down Hudson (3 blocks), turn south (left), drive all the way until almost the end. You won’t miss it: only place with raised beds in the front lawn, and white horse trailer. Big trees. House sits on airport side of Wellington.
