The last Kits Village recycling event (in mid March) was very successful with about 15 people attending. We gathered about 15 medium sized garbage bags (yes that is about one bag per person!). In other words we managed to divert a significant amount of stuff from the wastestream!
The April plastic recycling event will happen on Thursday April 19th. Currently, we accept the following categories of plastics: 1) soft plastics, i.e. any plastic bags, wraps or packaging, 2) hard plastics, i.e. any hard plastics, but with metal parts and paper removed, 3) styrofoam blocks, 4) styrofoam containers, i.e. cups and food take out containers, 5) styrofoam peanuts and other "soft" styrofoam, 6) wax lined beverage containers, 7) milk cartons (separate from other beverage containers), 8) foil lined bags packaging and wraps. We may be able to accept other things such as scrap metal, glass and paper in the future, but for now we will focus on plastics.
Here is how you can help if you would like to participate:
BEFORE YOU ARRIVE: 1) Please RSVP BEFORE April 15 on Village Vancouver’s website. This is important because we will not be able to request the pickup until at least 10 people RSVP. 2) Sort your plastics into the above eight categories. If you bring items that you do not know how to sort, please put those into a separate bag as well. 3) Only bring items that are CLEAN, i.e. no food products left in any bags or containers, beverage containers will have to be rinsed well and aired out, ESPECIALLY MILK CONTAINERS).
WHEN YOU ARRIVE: 1) put your plastics into the appropriate category bag. Ask organizers for help if you do not know how to sort when you arrive. 2) give the organizer the recycling fee. Everyone who brings plastics will pay a minimum of $3 for their plastics. If you fill one medium sized garbage bag, you will pay $5. Anything above one garbage bag is $7. This way we will be able to pay the depot at least $30 for the pickup and cover expenses of collection bags etc.
If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to e-mail Malin at hansen@zoology.ubc.ca
Thanks and hope to see you at the next collection!

Bina, I have already requested the pickup from PMD. They will pick up the bags from outside your house on Friday morning. We will put them on the sidewalk tomorrow night. I will bring enough garbage bags for the recycables. See you tomorrow.
Hi Malin,
For the purpose of headcount to request pickup- I do not have garbage bags for this month. Just hosting.
cheers, Bina
We will meet for a snack on Thursday, but there will be no real potluck. Feel free to bring fruit, cockies etc. I will send out the address later on today.
