The holiday season usually means that we end up with more packaging material than usual. While cardboard and paper easily can be recycled through Vancouver’s blue bin system, many of us wonder what to do with Styrofoam blocks, Styrofoam peanuts, and soft plastics.
Pacific Mobile Depots (www.pacificmobiledepots.com) recycle most plastics. They have a monthly depot at the Britannia Communtiy Centre on Commercial Dr., but they also pick up from neighbourhood groups.
Kits Village will arrange a pick-up in Kits for Friday January 20th, 2012. The plastics will be collected on Thursday January 19. The collection will take place at Mary’s place from 6:30-8:30pm (exact address and directions will be sent out to those who RSVP). There will be a Kits Village neighbourhood potluck the same evening starting at 6:30pm. Please come by and drop off your plastics and/or share a meal with neighbours.
In order to prepare for this event please start saving your plastics today! I have an electronic information sheet with a list of plastics that can be recycled through this project. I do not seem to be able to attach it here so e-mail me if you want a copy sent to you. The website above also has a list of the plastic categories. All plastics have to be clean and dry and sorted (or at least easy to separate). The cost per person will depend on how many people participate and how much plastics we collect, but will range from $2-5.
Please RSVP by sending an e-mail to hansen@zoology.ubc.ca by Sunday January 15. Include an estimate of how much plastics you will contribute, i.e. less than half a garbage bag, half a garbage bag, a full garbage bag or more than a garbage bag (but make sure to focus on plastics that cannot be recycled through the city program). Feel free to pass this message on to others who may be interested. Also, don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions.

Hi Ivey,
Yes, you can recycle your CD cases with this plastic service. Please sort them separately from any other plastics that you want to come over with. And no, the CD cases are not accepted by the City of Vancouver. They only take plastics #1 and #2.
