Coals to Newcastle: Shorter hours, unemployment, energy efficiency, and prospects for labor/environmental alliance*
From the frame-breaking "Luddite riots" in 1811-1816 to climate change and degrowth in 2011, the question of the relationship between "machines" (accumulation of capital), wages, hours of work and employment has simmered and sometimes raged. With historical documents, graphs and images, Tom Walker's presentation will illustrate why it's time – for reasons of ecology and equity – to put the traditional labor union demand for shorter hours back on the front burner.
