Want to learn more about Community Currency, and how a town, neighbourhood or whole region can create its very own money? Curious about where money comes from and how it works in the first place? Interested in how community currencies can become an important pillar of a more local, resilient economy and community?
Join myself and community currency pioneer and promoter Michael Linton for an enlightening, interactive presentation where you will learn about:
-How money works, where it comes from, and how the way in which money is designed can affect everything from the economy through the environment and the way in which people interact with one another.
-How community currencies can help address the economic, social, environmental and other challenges faced by communities everywhere.
-The history of community currencies from Guernsey in the early 1800's through the Great Depression and to the present day.
-Different kinds of community currencies and how they work.
-How you can get involved in making community currencies a reality here in Vancouver!
About the presenters:
-Michael Linton of Comox, BC is the inventor of the LETS (Local Exchange Trading System) model of mutual credit, a type of local currency that has spread thoughout the world since it was first launched in the Comox Valley in 1983. He is also the founder of the Community Way model of community currency that is currently being used in the Comox Valley, and which is in the process of being launched in Nelson and Vancouver.
-Jordan Bober is a member of Village Vancouver's Local Economy Network and is currently involved in a project to launch a community currency in Vancouver. His background in community currencies comes from research conducted for his Master's thesis in Economics on the subject.
Getting to the Student Union Building (SUB):
The easiest way to get to the SUB by public transit is to take the 99 B-Line on Broadway straight through to its terminus at the UBC Bus Loop. The SUB is the building just after the UBC Recreation Centre, the big building to the left of the bus stop.
When looking for the room number, please be aware that odd and even numbered rooms are on opposite sides of the building, so make sure to look on the odd side for Room 205!
